We investigate the isogeometric approximation of the Stokes problem in a trimmed domain, where the underlying mesh is not fitted to the physical domain boundary, posing a challenge for enforcing essential boundary conditions. We introduce three families of ...

We present a simple and versatile approach to test the accuracy of scattering calculations. Based on the Lorentz reciprocity relation, this criterion can be used for any scattering object, especially where a reference solution (e.g. from Mie theory) does n ...

In this paper, we propose a reduced-order modeling strategy for two-way Dirichlet-Neumann parametric coupled problems solved with domain-decomposition (DD) sub-structuring methods. We split the original coupled differential problem into two sub-problems wi ...

For a high-dimensional problem, a randomized Gram-Schmidt (RGS) algorithm is beneficial in terms of both computational cost and numerical stability. We apply this dimension reduction technique by random sketching to Krylov subspace methods, e.g., to the ge ...

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important tool for the simulation of the cardiovascular function and dysfunction. Due to the complexity of the anatomy, the transitional regime of blood flow in the heart, and the strong mutual influence between the ...

Numerical simulations have become an indispensable tool in astrophysics and cosmology. The constant need for higher accuracy, higher resolutions, and models of ever-increasing sophistication and complexity drives the development of modern tools which targe ...

Experimental data is imperative to characterize the behavior of materials used in structural analysis models. The aim of this data paper is to establish a database of material-scale uniaxial experiments, primarily conducted at EPFL, to assist with simulati ...

The optimization of surface finish to improve performance, such as adhesion, friction, wear, fatigue life, or interfacial transport, occurs largely through trial and error, despite significant advancements in the relevant science. There are three central c ...

This paper examines the minimization of the cost for an expected random production output, given an assembly of finished goods from two random inputs, matched in two categories. We describe the optimal input portfolio, first using the standard normal appro ...

The quantification of uncertainties can be particularly challenging for problems requiring long-time integration as the structure of the random solution might considerably change over time. In this respect, dynamical low-rank approximation (DLRA) is very a ...

Inspired by Sibson’s alpha-mutual information, we introduce a new parametric class of universal predictors. This class interpolates two well-known predictors, the mixture estimator, that includes the Laplace and the Krichevsky-Trofimov predictors, and the ...

We describe the first gradient methods on Riemannian manifolds to achieve accelerated rates in the non-convex case. Under Lipschitz assumptions on the Riemannian gradient and Hessian of the cost function, these methods find approximate first-order critical ...

Federated learning (FL) is a promising learning paradigm that can tackle the increasingly prominent isolated data islands problem while keeping users' data locally with privacy and security guarantees. However, FL could result in task-oriented data traffic ...

We consider an optimal control problem (OCP) for a partial differential equation (PDE) with random coefficients. The optimal control function is a deterministic, distributed forcing term that minimizes an expected quadratic regularized loss functional. For ...

This work develops novel rational Krylov methods for updating a large-scale matrix function f(A) when A is subject to low-rank modifications. It extends our previous work in this context on polynomial Krylov methods, for which we present a simplified conve ...

Analysis-suitable T-splines (ASTS) including both extraordinary points and T-junctions are used to solve Kirchhoff-Love shell problems. Extraordinary points are required to represent surfaces with arbitrary topological genus. T-junctions enable local refin ...

To solve hyperbolic conservation laws on general grids we propose to use high-order essentially nonoscillatory methods based on radial basis functions. We introduce an entropy stable arbitrary high-order finite dierence method (RBF-TeCNOp) and an entropy s ...

3D objects, modeled using Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD) tools, are traditionally represented using a boundary representation (B-rep), and typically use spline functions to parameterize these boundary surfaces. However, recent development in physic ...

An alternative approach for real-time network- wide traffic control in cities that has recently gained a lot of interest is perimeter flow control. The focus of the current work is to study two aspects that are not covered in the perimeter control literatu ...
