Because of established demolition routines and low construction-material production costs that neglect negative externalities, discarded concrete today is crushed and landfilled or downcycled as infill material or recycled aggregates, wasting its embodied ...

In typical reinforced concrete design, reinforcement is designed to carry axial forces, but it can also resist transversal forces by dowel action. This is usually neglected for simplicity's sake in the design phase, but it can be accounted for either expli ...

Building demolitions are often triggered by reasons independent of their structural conditions, causing the disposal of large quantities of reinforced concrete in good condition. Today, this concrete is, at best, crushed into aggregates, causing the loss o ...

Today, concrete is the most widely used construction material worldwide. Strong, versatile, durable, and vector of economic development, this exceptional material is also the principal cause of greenhouse-gas emissions, material depletion and waste generat ...

The examination of bridges under service loading is key for understanding their condition and thus for their sustainable and efficient use. The need to extend the service duration of existing bridges is increasing, and therefore, efficient tools for examin ...

A laboratory research program carried out at the University of Waterloo featured the testing of three large-scale steel-concrete composite beam specimens with embedded bolt shear connectors. A detailed assessment of the connector performance was made, faci ...

Steel reinforcing bars in concrete are protected from corrosion by a thin oxide film that is created on the steel surface in the highly alkaline environment of the concrete. Corrosion process begins once this oxide film is destroyed, for example, by chlori ...

A traditional difficulty in the understanding of the role of the various shear transfer actions in members without transverse reinforcement has been a lack of detailed measurements on the development of shear cracking and their associated kinematics during ...

The design of reinforced concrete flat slabs in practice can be governed at failure by punching shear close to concentrated loads or columns. Punching shear resistance formulations provided by codes are calibrated on the basis of experimental tests on isol ...

The shear resistance of RC slabs without shear reinforcement subjected to concentrated loads near linear support is usually calibrated on the base of tests on one – way slabs with rectangular cross section. However, the actual behavior of slabs subjected t ...

Experience has shown that when the models and methods that have been developed for the design of new structures are â blindlyâ used for the examination of existing ones, the management of civil infrastructure lacks substantially in financial efficiency ...

Lightning electromagnetic pulse (LEMP) is a severe threat to sensitive electronic devices installed in buildings. To protect these devices from LEMP effects, the evaluation of the electromagnetic fields inside of the building is required. Although numerous ...

The recent re-assessment of the seismic hazard in Europe led for many regions of low to moderate seismicity to an increase in the seismic demand. As a consequence, several modern unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings, constructed with reinforced concrete (R ...

In this paper a 2-phase decision tree algorithm is developed to qualitatively predict damage in RC buildings based on earthquake characteristics and structural properties. To this end, the structural properties considered are the natural period of the fund ...

In order to address how new knowledge influences design expressions, design codes have in most cases become significantly more complex over the last decades. However, this tendency is leading to codes that are too complicated for preliminary design but sti ...

The shear resistance of elements without stirrups has mainly been investigated by test setups involving simply supported beams of constant thickness subjected to one- or two-point loading, and most of the formulas included in codes have been adjusted using ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sandwich structures offer several advantages compared to structures made of traditional materials, such as high specific strength, good corrosion resistance, low thermal conductivity and rapid component installation. In this ...

This paper presents a model to predict the shear resistance of the unreinforced lightweight concrete core of a recently developed hybrid sandwich concept for bridge decks. The sandwich skins consist of a fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite sheet for t ...

Alexandre Sarrasin (1895-1976) studied at Zürich Federal Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH) from 1913 to 1918. Despite First World War's conflicts surrounding the neutral Switzerland, the intellectual climate inside ETH was cosmopolitan and liberal. As un ...
