Modern applications accumulate data at an exponentially increasing rate and traditional database systems struggle to keep up. Decision support systems used in industry, rely heavily on data analysis, and require real-time responses irrespective of data siz ...

Despite commonly reported potentials for emission reduction and efficiency increase, industrial heat pumps have yet to reach wide-scale employment in non-refrigeration appli- cations. The bottlenecks are identified as a general scepticism from process oper ...

Nearest neighbor searching of large databases in high-dimensional spaces is inherently difficult due to the curse of dimensionality. A flavor of approximation is, therefore, necessary to practically solve the problem of nearest neighbor search. In this pap ...

Enhancing speech intelligibility for hearing-impaired subjects in complex acoustic conditions is still a challenging topic of research. To mitigate the detrimental effects of background noise and reverberation, current hearing instruments incorporate vario ...

We study user interaction with touchscreens based on swipe gestures for personal authentication. This approach has been analyzed only recently in the last few years in a series of disconnected and limited works. We summarize those recent efforts and then c ...

Previous studies have investigated the slab effects on the cyclic behavior of composite beams in moment-resisting frames. Of interest in this paper, is the slab contribution to the flexural strength and effective stiffness of the beam. The former influence ...

This paper introduces a new task termed low-latency speaker spotting (LLSS). Related to security and intelligence applications, the task involves the detection, as soon as possible, of known speakers within multi-speaker audio streams. The paper describes ...

Index join performance is determined by the efficiency of the lookup operation on the involved index. Although database indexes are highly optimized to leverage processor caches, main memory accesses inevitably increase lookup runtime when the index outsiz ...

Automatic speaker verification systems can be spoofed through recorded, synthetic or voice converted speech of target speakers. To make these systems practically viable, the detection of such attacks, referred to as presentation attacks, is of paramount in ...

Xu et al. have recently published a set of results for boiling heat transfer measurements in a multi- channel micro- scale evaporator for flow boiling of acetone in triangular cross- section channels ( hydraulic diameter of 155.4 mm). In the present collab ...

The work presented in this thesis deals with several problems met in information retrieval (IR), task which one can summarise as identifying, in a collection of "documents", a subset of documents carrying a sought information, i.e.. relevant for a request ...

When interfacing Java with other systems such as databases, programmers must often program in special interface languages like SQL. Code written in these languages often needs to be embedded in strings where they cannot be error-checked at compile-time, or ...
