We propose a model order reduction technique to accurately approximate the behavior of multi-component systems without any a-priori knowledge of the coupled model. In the offline phase, we construct independent surrogate models by solving the local problem ...

Various endeavours into semantic web technologies and ontology engineering have been made within the organisation of cultural data, facilitating public access to digital assets. Although models for conceptualising objects have reached a certain level of ma ...

An integer linear program is a problem of the form max{c^T x : Ax=b, x >= 0, x integer}, where A is in Z^(n x m), b in Z^m, and c in Z^n. Solving an integer linear program is NP-hard in general, but there are several assumptions for which it becomes fixed ...

Machine learning has become the state of the art for the solution of the diverse inverse problems arising from computer vision and medical imaging, e.g. denoising, super-resolution, de-blurring, reconstruction from scanner data, quantitative magnetic reson ...

It is widely acknowledged that new technological specialisations of regions are to a large extent driven by the recombination of existing knowledge and capabilities. Yet, little is known about the role of policy in this process. To address this, we analyse ...

Intelligence involves processing sensory experiences into representations useful for prediction. Understanding sensory experiences and building these contextual representations without prior knowledge of sensor models and environment is a challenging unsup ...

As historical stone masonry structures are vulnerable and prone to damage in earthquakes, investigating their structural integrity is important to reduce injuries and casualties while preserving their historical value. Stone masonry is a composite material ...

The task of optimally designing and scheduling energy systems with a high share of renewable energies is complex and computationally demanding. A widespread method for tackling this task is to apply mixed integer linear programming (MILP). Even though the ...

Vehicle trajectory prediction tasks have been commonly tackled from two distinct perspectives: either with knowledge-driven methods or more recently with data-driven ones. On the one hand, we can explicitly implement domain-knowledge or physical priors suc ...

Ill-posed linear inverse problems are frequently encountered in image reconstruction tasks. Image reconstruction methods that combine the Plug-and-Play (PnP) priors framework with convolutional neural network (CNN) based denoisers have shown impressive per ...

Given an image sequence featuring a portion of a sports field filmed by a moving and uncalibrated camera, such as the one of the smartphones, our goal is to compute automatically in real time the focal length and extrinsic camera parameters for each image ...

The benefits and limitations inherent to the 2D post-processing of measurements from Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers are investigated from a fundamental point of view. In a preliminary step, the impact of curve fitting on the precision of the estim ...

Millions of digital images are captured by imaging devices on a daily basis. The way imaging devices operate follows an integral process from which the information of the original scene needs to be estimated. The estimation is done by inverting the integra ...

The objective of this thesis is to develop a general methodology to incorporate a disaggregate demand representation in supply-oriented optimization problems that allows to capture the interplay between the behavior of individuals and the decisions to be o ...

Data dimensionality reduction in radio interferometry can provide savings of computational resources for image reconstruction through reduced memory footprints and lighter computations per iteration, which is important for the scalability of imaging method ...

Approximation algorithms are a commonly used tool for designing efficient algorithmic solutions for intractable problems, at the expense of the quality of the output solution. A prominent technique for designing such algorithms is the use of Linear Program ...

Conventional ultrasound (US) image reconstruction methods rely on delay-and-sum (DAS) beamforming, which is a relatively poor solution of the image reconstruction problem. An alternative to DAS consists in using iterative techniques which require both an a ...

Ongoing advances in imaging techniques create new demands regarding the analysis of images in medicine and biology. Image segmentation is a key step of many image analysis pipelines and its proper execution is a particularly challenging task. This thesis i ...

We develop a fast algorithm for segmenting 3D images from linear measurements based on the Potts model (or piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model). To that end, we first derive suitable space discretizations of the 3D Potts model, which are capable of deali ...

Semantic segmentation algorithms that can robustly segment objects across multiple camera viewpoints are crucial for assuring navigation and safety in emerging applications such as autonomous driving. Existing algorithms treat each image in isolation, but ...
