Sensorineural hearing loss is a profound form of deafness, arising from damage to cochlear hair cells, which can be treated by limited clinical options such as cochlear implants. However, the implantation procedure carries the inherent risk of electrode in ...

Introduction: Glaucoma, the leading cause of irreversible blindness globally, affects more than 70 million people across the world. When initial treatments prove ineffective, especially for cases with high intraocular pressure (IOP), the preferred approach ...

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is defined clinically as the presence of optic nerve head (ONH) degeneration and progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Intra-ocular pressure (IOP) has been con ...

A hollow variable stiffness thread including a flexible inner tube, a conductive shape memory polymer (CSMP) layer arranged around the inner tube forming a variable stiffness zone, a flexible encapsulation layer arranged around the CSMP layer, and a first ...

PURPOSE: To determine and compare the origin of the external surface reflections produced by commonly used intraocular lenses (IOLs). ...

Sight restoration through retinal prostheses was still a mere dream a century ago. Current challenges are even greater: providing a quantitatively and qualitatively useful artificial vision to late blind patients. Existing approaches all face engineering a ...

Neural interfaces are used to mitigate the burden of traumatic injuries, neurodegenerative diseases, and mental disorders. However, the transient or permanent placement of an interface in close contact with the neural tissue requires invasive surgery, pote ...

Laser photo-detachment combined with a Langmuir probe (LP) is used to diagnose negative ion properties in electronegative plasmas. The technique relies on the combined use of a laser pulse and an LP. The laser pulse converts negative ions into electron-ato ...

This thesis develops novel multi-degrees-of-freedom flexure-based force sensors by exploiting white light interferometry. Fabry-Pérot interferometry measurement has nanometric accuracy which yields sub milli-Newton force sensing accuracy. Such force sensin ...

Introduction Primary paragangliomas (PG) of the spine are extremely rare entities. The present study reviews our experience over a period of 30 years. Methods This is a retrospective, single center, observational study. Patients surgically treated for a sp ...

Retinal prostheses have been developed to fight blindness in people affected by outer retinal layer dystrophies. To date, few hundred patients have received a retinal implant. Inspired by intraocular lenses, we have designed a foldable and photovoltaic wid ...

Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of a glaucoma procedure to control intraocular pressure (IOP) using the adjustable eyeWatch glaucoma drainage device compared with Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) in refractory glaucoma. Patients and Methods: Monocentr ...

Purpose: To report the outcome and complications of a combined surgical technique of modified deep sclerectomy and trabeculectomy (mDST) for glaucoma. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study of 44 eyes of 43 patients with open and closed angle glaucoma w ...

The most effective way to control glaucoma is by lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in order to prevent the progression of the disease. Glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) are surgical option reserved for refractory cases and have been designed to address kn ...

An ocular drainage system is provided for treating diseases that produce elevated intraocular pressures, such as glaucoma, wherein the system includes an implantable device and an external control unit, the implantable device includes a non-invasively adju ...

The eyeWatch(TM) is a new glaucoma drainage device that includes an adjustable mechanism that can vary the resistance to aqueous humor outflow during the postoperative period to reduce the burden of postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) management. The ...

The technological evolution in materials science and microengineering favored the production of advanced visual prostheses useful for fighting blindness and to improve patients quality of life. Visual prostheses aim at replacing lost visual functions by ar ...

Detection of surgical instruments plays a key role in ensuring patient safety in minimally invasive surgery. In this paper, we present a novel method for 2D vision-based recognition and pose estimation of surgical instruments that generalizes to different ...

Neural interfaces are devices that are implanted into the body and interface electrically with the central (CNS) or peripheral nervous system. They are inserted surgically for short periods of time or chronically to diagnose or treat several neural disease ...

PURPOSE. The avian eye is an established model for exploring mechanisms that coordinate morphogenesis and metabolism during embryonic development. Less is known, however, about trafficking of bioenergetic and metabolic signaling molecules that are involved ...
