This article applies a systematic methodology to the optimization and comparison of two sugarcane conversion processes of great potential: the production of first generation ethanol and electricity in an integrated distillery and cogeneration plant (1G+COG ...

A typical La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta (LSCF) electrode was reconstructed by X-ray nanotomography. The new Nano Imaging beamline ID16A-NI of the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) was used to conduct the investigation. Particular attention was ...

Kinetic simulations of two-dimensional finite-amplitude electron plasma waves are performed in a one-wavelength long system. A systematic study of the most unstable linear sideband mode, in particular its growth rate gamma and wavenumber k(y), is carried o ...

The main characteristics of Hall Effect Sensors, based on "silicon-on-insulator" (SOI) structure in the ideal design features, are evaluated by performing three-dimensional physical simulations. A particular Hall shape reproducing an XFAB SOI XI10 integrat ...

When using natural or waste wood in thermo-chemical conversion processes, the presence of a number of heteroatoms (e.g. sulfur, chlorine, potassium and sodium or heavy metals) may hinder the processes themselves as well as pose a threat to equipment and/or ...

Background: In this paper, we present a framework for improving the accuracy of fixed-step methods for Monte Carlo simulation of discrete stochastic chemical kinetics. Stochasticity is ubiquitous in many areas of cell biology, for example in gene regulatio ...

A combined simulation of runoff dynamics and distributed transport of the stable isotope oxygen-18 (18O) was performed in the mountainous Dreisam basin (258 km2) in the southwest of Germany. For this purpose, a mixing cell solute routing scheme was impleme ...

This paper introduces a framework for real-time simulation and rendering of crowds navigating in a virtual environment. The solution first consists in a specific environment preprocessing technique giving rise to navigation graphs, which are then used by t ...

The objective of this paper is to assess the capability of existing lighting simulation methods to predict the performance of Complex Fenestration Systems (CFS), whose potential in daylight and sunlight control make them an increasingly popular alternative ...

The expansion of 3D real-time simulations (3DRTS) into millions of homes together with the technical progress of computers hardware force to approach software developments for 3DRTS from different perspectives. From an historical standpoint, 3DRTS started ...

In this paper, we model a spatially varying channel where a source is moving along a random trajectory with respect to a fixed re- ceiver. The aim is to compute the power spectral density corre- sponding to the channel impulse response as a function of tem ...

Problems related to Dioxins contamination in Southern Vietnam are until now still a hot newsreel and controversy subject in international conferences as well as in many articles. The adverse effects of Dioxins residue from chemicals used by U.S. Army durin ...

In this paper we give an overview of new requirements to the modeling and simulation of analog and mixed-signal systems. We give brief examples from two application domains and reveal limitations of established means for modeling and simulation. New challe ...

Current and future dynamics, of environmental legislations and trading market, of the fuel and electricity prices due to the market liberalization or resource shortages, and of the innovations of power/cogeneration technologies, impose great challenges on ...

Mobile communication, in particular mobile telephony, is a service whose nonexistence nowadays is unimaginable. The ongoing, ever increasing penetration of mobile communication equipment, presently intensified by the transition from second generation1 to t ...

Connectivity among demes in a metapopulation depends on both the landscape's and the focal organism's properties (including its mobility and cognitive abilities). Using individual-based simulations, we contrast the consequences of three different cognitive ...

In this paper, we describe one solution to the two-user Slepian-Wolf problem in a certain part of the achievable region using fountain codes. Symmetric case of memoryless compression of two correlated sources is considered and modeled by a BSC channel. The ...

This study addresses the thermo economic assessment of a biomass gasification, gas cleaning and energy conversion process, with particular attention given to tar control and the communication of the process design rationale. Product distributions were esti ...

Instead of the reality in which you can see your own limbs, in virtual reality simulations it is sometimes disturbing not to be able to see your own body. It seems to create an issue in the proprioperception of the user who does not completely feel integra ...

This thesis proposes a framework for haptic devices interacting with virtual environments. As application of the theoretical results a haptic device for the surgical training of hysteroscopy, a gynecologic intervention, is presented. Surgery simulators, wh ...
