In the present report we describe the research work that has been carried out in the scope of the first 2 year phase of the d-Rank project.

Analysis of magnetic fluctuations is important for understanding the magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) properties of fusion plasmas. These properties affect nearly all aspects of behaviour of magnetic confinement, and thus are of interest in topics ranging from global plasma stability, control, and disruption avoidance, to more subtle areas such as MHD spectroscopy. Mode number analysis is generally accomplished by interpreting signals from a finite number of Mirnov coils, which typically are unevenly spaced in th

Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) is a powerful imaging technique allowing, from a single amplitude image (amplitude and phase), reflected acquisition (hologram), the reconstruction of the entire complex wave front by or transmitted through an object. Because holography is an interferometric technique, the reconstructed phase leads to a sub-wavelength axial accuracy (below lambda/100). Nevertheless, this accuracy is difficult to obtain from a single hologram. Indeed, the reconstruction process consisting

We investigate in this paper a numerical method to control the temperature of an induction heating process through electric current parameters such as frequency and current voltage imposed to the terminals of the inductor. We seek a sinusoidal voltage function whose amplitude varies in time. For this, we use a two-dimensional induction heating model. that involves a phase transition in which the magnetic field has only one nonvanishing component. The procedure can be extended to more sophisticated models wi

A novel concept for triggering conformational transitions, and thus changes in structure and function, in peptides with a switching element S provides intriguing perspectives for studying mol. processes that play a key role, for example, in early events of Alzheimer's disease. [on SciFinder (R)]

A new type of Nafion/Fe structured membrane ensuring faster kinetics, higher efficiency, and mechanical properties has been prepared and will be compared in its performance with the Fe-exchanged commercial Dupont 117 Nafion/Fe membrane during the abatement of model organic compounds. During the casting of the laboratory Nafion sample, the iron ions were introduced directly into the Nafion oligomer solution. This novel laboratory Nafion/Fe was tested as an immobilized catalyst in the degradation of several t

A new expt. allows the identification of residues that feature slow conformational exchange in macromols. Rotations about dihedral angles that are slower than the global correlation time tc cause a modulation of the isotropic chem. shifts of the nuclei. If these fluctuations are correlated they induce a differential line broadening between three-spin single-quantum and triple-quantum coherences involving three nuclei such as the carbonyl C', the neighboring amide nitrogen N and the amide proton HN belonging

The room temperature structure (a-form) of the organic compound p-chlorobenzamide, C7H6ClNO, can be described as a classical three-dimensional periodic superstructure (alpha(s)) and also as a commensurately modulated structure (alpha(m)) in (3 + 1)-dimensional superspace. The diffraction pattern is characterized by a clear difference in intensity between main and satellite reflections. All reflections can be indexed with four indices hklm in a triclinic unit cell and one modulation vector in the superspace

Cluster synchronization modes of continuous time oscillators that are diffusively coupled in a three-dimensional (3-D) lattice are studied in the paper via the corresponding linear invariant manifolds. Depending in an essential way on the number of oscillators composing the lattice in three volume directions, the set of possible regimes of spatiotemporal synchronization is examined. Sufficient conditions of the stability of cluster synchronization are obtained analytically for a wide class of coupled dynami

This work deals with modeling and control of thermoacoustic combustion instabilities in lean premixed combustion systems. Because of the complex interactions present in thermoacoustic systems, a network modeling approach is used. The model of each network element or subsystem is obtained analytically, numerically, or by making use of experimental techniques. The dynamics of a network system are determined experimentally by making use of a transfer matrix measurement technique. The transfer functions of a pr

The description at at. level of protein folding is an ambitious goal in biophysics, particularly because of the difficulty in obtaining structural information on unfolded states. Computer simulations can contribute in achieving this goal. Here we report the results of a 10-ns comparative simulation on bovine RNase A and its S-protein, obtained by removal from the native mol. of the first 20 residues, the so-called S-peptide. The at. trajectories have been analyzed by std. procedures and by applying concepts

We used pulsed laser deposition, with a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x target, to grow films ranging from (1/4) to 10 unit cells thick. We studied these films, and reference Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x single crystal samples, using angle-integrated photoemission, core level photoemission, and x-ray diffraction. The data indicate that all films exhibit a metallic-like Fermi edge in the photoemission data. More strikingly, a structural phase transition occurs at a nominal Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x thickness of approximately one unit cell, conver
