Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials are currently being selected for the design of lightweight and efficient structural members in a wide number of engineering applications. Sandwich panels with glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) face she ...

Bio-based resins, obtained from renewable raw materials, are a more sustainable alternative to oil-based resins for fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The incorporation of lignin in those resins has the potential to enhance their performance. This ...

Thin-ply composites, obtained with recently developed fiber spreading techniques, rapidly gained industrial interest because they offer a large composite design freedom, and lead to a composite tensile strength that is close to that of the individual fiber ...

The interplay between capillary and viscous forces plays a significant role for optimal part quality in fiber-reinforced composites manufactured by Liquid Composite Molding (LCM); these are however difficult to analyze during flow. Two approaches are propo ...

This study investigates the intrusion and crushing performance of hybrid fiber metal laminates based on aluminum and carbon fiber reinforced polymers, in comparison to reference aluminum parts, made from AA6451 or AA7075 automotive grade alloys. A first se ...

In recent years, retrofitting of steel structures has emerged as a major issue in structural engineering and construction management. As the adhesive bond is often the critical aspect controlling the actual performance of steel profiles externally strength ...

The lack of ductility is a major drawback of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) materials. As it is known, these materials are stiff and strong, but brittle with little or no warning before final failure. In the last decades, some solutions have been proposed ...

Capillarity plays a crucial role in many natural and engineered systems, ranging from nutrient delivery in plants to functional textiles for wear comfort or thermal heat pipes for heat dissipation. Unlike nano- or microfluidic systems with well-defined por ...

Today, it is widely accepted that fatigue is one of the most common failure mechanisms in structural components, and pure static failure is rarely observed. Engineering structures are subjected to complex mechanical fatigue loading histories, which cause d ...

Phase-separated blends of epoxy and poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) provide crack repair in composites after a thermal treatment at 150 °C, but decrease the material’s fracture toughness. This article investigates the combination of healing with interlaminar fr ...

The present work investigates a novel and practical method to evaluate the healing efficiency of carbon-reinforced polymer composites. The method should be representative of damage occurring during the lifetime of a composite part, should tend to damage th ...

This experimental study reports effect of tuft geometry i.e., standard tufts and loops milled-down, and tufting pattern on Mode I interlaminar fracture in a GFRP. Standard tufting geometry is responsible for an increase in fracture resistance by 3.5-6 time ...

In this study, three novel thermoplastic impregnation processes were analyzed towards automotive applications. The first process is thermoplastic compression resin transfer molding in which a glass fiber mat is impregnated in through thickness by a thermop ...

Nature and technical applications abound with thin viscous flows, ranging from the lava flow on volcanoes to the lubricating layer around confined bubbles in the microchannels of Lab-on-a-Chip devices. Countless are the examples where coating flows arise i ...

Continuous fiber thermoplastic composites are potential substitutes of steel in structural automotive components, since they combine fiber strength and rigidity with ductility, potential recyclability and low density of the thermoplastic (TP) matrix. Resin ...

The prediction of the critical buckling conditions of shell structures is plagued by imperfection sensitivity. Non-destructive testing through point-load probing has been recently proposed to map the stability landscape of cylindrical shells. However, the ...

A novel Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) mix with synthetic fibers and a low clinker matrix, henceforth referred to as PE-UHPFRC, has been developed for structural applications. It exhibits a high tensile elastic limit above 7 MPa, ...

In this study, silica glass, optical fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) are used for torque-induced strain monitoring in carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) hollow shafts toward the development of a methodology for structural load monitoring. Optical fibers wi ...
