Reciprocity guarantees that in most media, sound transmission is symmetric between two points of space when the location of the source and receiver are interchanged. This fundamental law can be broken in non-linear media, often at the cost of detrimental i ...

Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

This paper introduces Wireless IoT-based Noise Cancellation (WINC) which defines a framework for leveraging a wireless network of IoT microphones to enhance active noise cancellation in noise-canceling headphones. The IoT microphones forward ambient noise ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...

In sensed buildings, information related to occupant movement helps optimize important func-tionalities such as caregiving, energy management, and security enhancement. Typical sensing approaches for occupant tracking rely on mobile devices and cameras. Th ...

Eccentricity has emerged as a potentially useful tool for helping to identify the origin of black hole mergers. However, eccentric templates can be computationally very expensive owing to the large number of harmonics, making statistical analyses to distin ...

This database is meant to evaluate the performance of denoising and delineation algorithms for PPG signals affected by noise. The noise generator allows applying the algorithms under test to an artificially corrupted reference PPG signal and comparing its ...

Auditory perception is an essential part of a robotic system in Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), and creating an artificial auditory perception system that is on par with human has been a long-standing goal for researchers. In fact, this is a challenging res ...

The paper considers the problem of estimating the parameters of the compound admittance matrix of three-phase untransposed low-and medium-voltage electrical distribution networks using synchrophasor measurements from phasor measurement units (PMUs). The wo ...

Occupant detection and recognition support functional goals such as security, healthcare, and energy management in buildings. Typical sensing approaches, such as smartphones and cameras, undermine the privacy of building occupants and inherently affect the ...

Recent advances in signal processing, machine learning and deep learning with sparse intrinsic structure of data have paved the path for solving inverse problems in acoustics and audio. The main task of this thesis was to bridge the gap between the powerfu ...

Inspired by the human ability to localize sounds, even with only one ear, as well as to recognize objects using active echolocation, we investigate the role of sound scattering and prior knowledge in regularizing ill-posed inverse problems in acoustics. In ...

Conventional loudspeakers generate sound through the vibration of a diaphragm, attached to a rigid frame through elastic suspensions. Although such construction is satisfactory for sound diffusion in steady environments, it is likely to fail in harsh condi ...

In this paper we present Aligned Scores and Performances (ASAP): a new dataset of 222 digital musical scores aligned with 1068 performances (more than 92 hours) of Western classical piano music. The scores are provided as paired MusicXML files and quantized ...

Objective. Among the different approaches for denoising neural signals, wavelet-based methods are widely used due to their ability to reduce in-band noise. All wavelet denoising algorithms have a common structure, but their effectiveness strongly depends o ...

A computer-implemented method for operating a haptic device, the haptic device comprising a plurality of tactile displays configured to provide haptic stimuli to a user, the method including the steps of (a) processing an audio signal derived from an audio ...

In sensed buildings, information related to occupant movement helps optimize important functionalities such as security enhancement, energy management, and caregiving. Typical sensing approaches for occupant tracking rely on mobile devices and cameras. The ...

Multivariate Hawkes processes (MHP) are widely used in a variety of fields to model the occurrence of discrete events. Prior work on learning MHPs has only focused on inference in the presence of perfect traces without noise. We address the problem of lear ...

We study the effect of the stochastic gradient noise on the training of generative adversarial networks (GANs) and show that it can prevent the convergence of standard game optimization methods, while the batch version converges. We address this issue with ...

Recent advances in photographic sensing technologies have made it possible to achieve light detection in terms of a single photon. Photon counting sensors are being increasingly used in many diverse applications. We address the problem of jointly recoverin ...
