DEMO will have a limited diagnostic set for optimization of reactor performance, and limited diagnostic coverage due to challenging reactor conditions. This poses challenges for control, especially for detachment control which is planned to be performed wi ...

Tokamak devices aim to magnetically confine a hydrogen plasma at sufficiently high pressure to achieve net energy production from nuclear fusion of light isotopes. Predictive modeling and optimization is crucial for reliable operation of tokamak reactors, ...

Gamma rays in nuclear reactors, arising either from nuclear reactions or decay processes, significantly contribute to the heating and dose of the reactor components. Zero power research reactors offer the possibility to measure gamma rays in a purely neutr ...

Reductive catalytic fractionation (RCF) is a promising approach to fractionate lignocellulose and convert lignin to a narrow product slate. To guide research towards commercialization, cost and sustainability must be considered. Here we report a techno-eco ...

In recent years, Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs), one of the Generation IV concepts, have noticeably gained in interest. Several molten salt reactor types use fuel in liquid form, bringing various advantages, notably in terms of fuel cycle. However, simulating ...

Sodium-cooled fast reactor (SFR) technologies have the potential to guarantee energy supply and to reduce the burden of nuclear waste for future generations. For an adequate simulation of these reactor systems, well-established tools that have so far been ...

This paper presents the computational fluid dynamics modeling of an additive manufacturing process that is candidate for the production of Gen IV nuclear reactor fuels. The modeled process combines the internal gelation to produce metal hydrous oxides with ...

The specific problem of non-converted reactant accumulation encountered in fed-batch reactor is a challenging task of process safety. In order to avoid such situation that may lead to a runaway reaction, the reaction kinetics and reactor dynamic must be kn ...

Kinetic effects have been implemented in the three-dimensional full-wave code LEMan. These allow modeling Landau damping as well as the Kinetic Alfvén Wave (KAW). Special attention has been taken on the exact computation of the parallel wave vector as it c ...

This paper examines the possibility of using the principle of conservation of canonical momentum applied to heavy ion beam orbits to obtain an estimate of the local poloidal flux at the position of ionization in a tokamak plasma. The presence of a nonaxisy ...

R&D activities on fusion reactor materials in Switzerland focus on (1) the development of advanced metallic materials for structural applications in plasma-facing (first wall, divertor) and breeding blanket components of the future fusion power reactors, i ...

The recent experimental programme conducted in the PROTEUS research reactor at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) has concerned detailed investigations of advanced light water reactor (LWR) fuels. More than fifteen different configurations of the multi-zone ...

The solvent-free selective hydrogenation of 2-methyl-3-butyn-2-ol (MBY) to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol (MBE) was studied over a Pd/ZnO structured catalyst and compared to its behavior in water-assisted conditions. The catalytic behavior was correlated with the s ...

The present paper concerns a novel type of integral database generated in the course of the LWR-PROTEUS Phase I experiments, viz. the relative reactivity effects of removing individual fuel pins from a highly heterogeneous BWR assembly. The measurements re ...

The effects of neutron irradiation on austenitic stainless steels, usually used for the manufacturing of internal elements of nuclear reactors (e.g. the core shrouds), are the alteration of the microstructure, and, as a consequence, of the mechanical prope ...

The paper presents a comparison of transient calculations for two 80-MWt MOX-fuelled experimental accelerator-driven systems (XADS), one cooled by lead-bismuth eutectic and the other by helium. The results for protected (with accelerator beam trip) and unp ...
