The electron density close to the extraction grids and the co-extracted electrons represent a crucial issue when operating negative ion sources for fusion reactors. An excessive electron density in the plasma expansion region can indeed inhibit the negativ ...

A new Additive-Manufacturing (AM) or 3D printing concept is proposed to improve the printing resolution for metal additive manufacturing in the frame of the SFA-AM project, Powder Focusing for Beam-Induced Laser 3D Printing. The project aims to transport s ...

A device capable of converting single quanta of the microwave field to the optical domain is an outstanding endeavor in the context of quantum interconnects between distant superconducting qubits, but likewise can have applications in other fields, such as ...

Arising from modulation instability, Turing rolls in optical Kerr microresonators have been used in the generation of optical frequency combs and the synthesis of microwave and terahertz frequencies. In this work, by applying electro-optic modulation on te ...

Dissipative Kerr soliton generation using self-injection-locked III-V lasers has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcombs that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, continuous-wave-driven soliton microcombs exhibit low e ...

Solid-state nanopores provide a highly sensitive tool for single-molecule sensing and probing nanofluidic effects in solutions. Glass nanopipettes are a cheap and robust type of solid-state nanopore produced from pulling glass capillaries with opening orif ...

With optical spectral marks equally spaced by a frequency in the microwave or the radio frequency domain, optical frequency combs have been used not only to synthesize optical frequencies from microwave references but also to generate ultralow-noise microw ...

Harmonic oscillators might be one of the most fundamental entities described by physics. Yet they stay relevant in recent research. The topological properties associated with exceptional points that can occur when two modes interact have generated much int ...

Additive manufacturing (AM) of passive microwave components is of high interest for the cost-effective and rapid prototyping or manufacture of devices with complex geometries. Here, we present an experimental study on the properties of recently demonstrate ...

Nonreciprocal devices, such as isolators, are required to protect sensitive superconducting quantum circuits. Growing research has focused on integrated alternatives to the existing bulky ferrite technologies. Here we realize a nonreciprocal isolator with ...

Software defined radios (SDR) in the microwave X- and K-bands offer the promise of low cost, programmable operation with real-time frequency agility. However, the real world in which such radios operate requires them to be able to detect nanowatt signals i ...

A primary challenge in quantum science and technology is to isolate the fragile quantum states from their environment in order to prevent the irreversible leakage of energy and information which causes decoherence. In the late 1990s, however, a new paradig ...

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy allows one to study and analyze the structure, motions and interactions of a broad variety of molecules. However, this technique has a major inconvenience: its low sensitivity, which therefore often results in ...

Isolation of a system from its environment is often desirable, from precision measurements to control of individual quantum systems; however, dissipation can also be a useful resource. Remarkably, engineered dissipation enables the preparation of quantum s ...

Phase coherently linking optical-to-radio frequencies with femtosecond mode-locked laser frequency combs has enabled counting the cycles of light and is the basis of optical clocks, absolute frequency synthesis, tests of fundamental physics, and improved s ...

This paper proposes, for the first time, a compact model for avalanche noise diodes that can easily be inserted in advanced CAD tools. The model is based on the theory of the Read type microwave avalanche diodes. It fully accounts for the electronic tuning ...

There is currently great interest in understanding the limits on NMR signal enhancements provided by dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP), and in particular if the theoretical maximum enhancements can be achieved. We show that over a 2-fold improvement in cr ...

In dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP), also called hyperpolarisation, a small amount of unpaired electron spins is added to the sample containing the nuclear spins, and the polarisation of these unpaired electron spins is transferred to the nuclear spins b ...

The low temperature microwave absorption anomaly reported by Corzilius et al. [Phys. Rev. B 75, 235416 (2007)] in single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is revisited. It was originally reported that the microwave absorption of CVD grown SWCNTs shows an unex ...

The use of carbon fibre reinforced plastics is steadily increasing in the aerospace industry as rising fuel costs and concerns over the environment push airframe manufacturers to improve aircraft efficiency. The high costs associated with manufacturing car ...
