This PhD thesis presents a search for Heavy Neutral Leptons (HNLs) using data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). HNLs are hypothetical new particles proposed in several theoretical extensions of the Standard Model (SM) ...

The Standard Model (SM) of particle physics represents our most fundamental knowledge of elementary particles and their interactions. One of the cardinal properties of the SM which has been thoroughly studied during the past years is the so-called Lepton F ...

The weak gravity conjecture has been invoked to conjecture that the dimensions of charged operators in a CFT should obey a superadditivity relation (sometimes referred to as convexity). In this paper, we study superadditivity of the operator spectrum in th ...

Results are presented for a test of the compositeness of the heaviest charged lepton, τ, using data collected by the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV at the CERN LHC. The data were collected in 2016–2018 and c ...

We consider correlators for the flux of energy and charge in the background of operators with large global U(1) charge in conformal field theory (CFT). It has recently been shown that the corresponding Euclidean correlators generically admit a semiclassica ...

The expectation value of a smooth conformal line defect in a CFT is a conformal invariant functional of its path in space-time. For example, in large N holographic theories, these fundamental observables are dual to the open-string partition function in Ad ...

Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, we identify a class of CFT operators which represent diff-invariant and approximately local observables in the gravitational dual. Provided that the bulk state breaks all asymptotic symmetries, we show that these operator ...

In ferroelectric switching, an applied electric field switches the system between two polar symmetry-equivalent states. In this work, we use first-principles calculations to explore the polar states of hydrogen-doped samarium nickelate (SNO) at a concentra ...

We study the renormalization group flow of unitary Quantum Field Theories on two-dimensional de Sitter (dS) spacetime. We prove the existence of two functions of the radius of dS that interpolate between the central charges of the UV and IR fixed points of ...

Phase transitions in condensed matter are a source of exotic emergent properties. We study the fully frustrated bilayer Heisenberg antiferromagnet to demonstrate that an applied magnetic field creates a previously unknown emergent criticality. The quantum ...

We explore the physics of relativistic gapless phases defined by a mixed anomaly between two generalized conserved currents. The gapless modes can be understood as Goldstone modes arising from the nonlinear realization of (generically higher-form) symmetri ...

The classical Lagrangian of the Standard Model enjoys the symmetry of the full conformal group if the mass of the Higgs boson is put to zero. This is a hint that conformal symmetry may play a fundamental role in the ultimate theory describing nature. The o ...

In this work we study families of Z(2) orbifolds of toroidal conformal field theories based on both factorizable and non-factorizable target space tori. For these classes of theories, we analyze their moduli spaces, and compute their partition functions. B ...

In this Letter, we address the question of whether the conformal invariance can be considered as a global symmetry of a theory of fundamental interactions. To describe Nature, this theory must contain a mechanism of spontaneous breaking of the scale symmet ...

An inclusive search for long-lived exotic particles (LLPs) decaying to final states with a pair of muons is presented. The search uses data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.6 fb(-1) collected by the CMS experiment from the proton-proton coll ...

We study two-point functions of symmetric traceless local operators in the bulk of de Sitter spacetime. We derive the Kallen-Lehmann spectral decomposition for any spin and show that unitarity implies its spectral densities are nonnegative. In addition, we ...

We study applications of spectral positivity and the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) to renormalization group (RG) flows in two-dimensional quantum field theory. We find a succinct new proof of the Zamolodchikov c-theorem, and derive further independ ...

A search for the production of long-lived particles in proton- proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeVat the CERN LHC is presented. The search is based on data collected by the CMS experiment in 2016-2018, corresponding to a total integrated ...

We prove that in any unitary CFT, a twist gap in the spectrum of operator product expansion (OPE) of identical scalar quasiprimary operators (i.e. phi x phi) implies the existence of a family of quasiprimary operators O t,l with spins l ->.infinity and twi ...

A study of the anomalous couplings of the Higgs boson to vector bosons, including CP-violation effects, has been conducted using its production and decay in the WW channel. This analysis is performed on proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS d ...
