This thesis explores the diverse chemistry of thorium and uranium coordination polymers, focusing on actinides in +4 and +5 oxidation states, and their reactivity with various ligands. While uranium predominantly exists as the uranyl cation [UO2]2+ in the ...

Members of the Shewanella genus transfer electrons to metal and actinide electron acceptors such as hexavalent uranium, U(VI), via c-type cytochromes. The intracellular mechanism of electron transfer is well studied but the delivery of electrons to externa ...

G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) are key regulators of human physiology and are the targets of many small-molecule research compounds and therapeutic drugs. While most of these ligands bind to their target GPCR with high affinity, selectivity is often l ...

One of the main goals of organometallic chemistry in the last decades was the activation of small molecule in mild reaction conditions. Even though multiple examples of catalytic cycles able to produce fine chemicals from cheap and abundant sources using t ...

The small Stokes shift and weak emission in the solid state are two main shortcomings associated with the boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) family of dyes. This study presents the design, synthesis and luminescent properties of boron difluoro complexes of 2-ar ...

Super-selective multivalent ligand-receptor interactions display a signature step-like onset in binding when meeting a characteristic density of target receptors. Materials engineered for super-selective binding generally display a high number of flexible ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have firmly established in the field of porous materials since their early discovery in the 1990s. With a plethora of applications, these materials offer endless possibilities owing to their tunable, modular nature. The vast ...

A novel nanocomposite bead based on polymeric matrix of carboxymethyl cellulose and copper oxide-nickel oxide nanoparticles was synthesized, characterized, and applied for adsorptive removal of inorganic and organic contaminants at trace level of part per ...

The Fenton reaction is an effective advanced oxidation process occurring in nature and applied in engineering processes toward the degradation of harmful substances, including contaminants of emerging concern. The traditional Fenton application can be rema ...

Most of our understanding of chemistry derives from atomic-level structures obtained with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Metal centers in X-ray structures of small organometallic or coordination complexes are often extremely well-defined, with errors in ...

Our society is engaged in a major shift towards more sustainable industries. The required transition from fossils to renewable resources with low greenhouse gas emission is specifically challenging in the transportation sector where high thermal efficiency ...

CONSPECTUS: Ligand development plays an essential role in the advance of homogeneous catalysis. Tridentate, meridionally coordinating ligands, commonly termed pincer ligands, have been established as a privileged class of ligands in catalysis because they ...

Hydrogenases are promising templates for constructing new H-2-based catalysts. [Fe]-hydrogenase, which features an ironguanylylpyridinol (FeGP) cofactor, catalyses a reversible hydride transfer from H-2 to methenyl-tetrahydromethanopterin (methenyl-H4MPT+, ...

Mendeleev in his first publication ordered the chemical elements following an apparent periodicity of properties such as atomic volume and valence. The reactivity of the elements was only studied systematically many years later. To illustrate the systemati ...

Dissolution of iron(III)phases is a key process in soils, surface waters, and the ocean. Previous studies found that traces of Fe(II) can greatly increase ligand controlled dissolution rates at acidic pH, but the extent that this also occurs at circumneutr ...

Modeling chemical reaction systems is an important but complex task. The identified kinetic model must be able to explain all the underlying rate processes such as chemical reactions and heat and mass transfers. Traditionally, the modeling task is carried ...

This thesis describes the design and synthesis of clathrochelate metalloligands for the construction of molecular nanostructures. The low synthetic effort, versatility and stability of the clathrochelate metalloligands makes them particularly suited to the ...

Continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis (CHFS) is a facile, upscalable and cost-efficient synthetic method enabling the nanostructuring of advanced functional materials in steady conditions, i.e. not in batch synthesis. In this paper, we use CHFS to crystal ...
