Global warming is predicted to have a strong impact on mountain ecosystems. Subalpine sylvopastoral systems are very sensitive to climate change, which puts their future sustainability at stake. These ecosystems are mostly dominated by spruce and beech, an ...

The pasture-woodlands of Central Europe are low-intensity grazing systems in which the structural richness of dynamic forest-grassland mosaics is causal for their high biodiversity. Distinct mosaic patterns in Picea abies- and Fagus sylvatica-dominated pas ...

Modern pollen samples provide an invaluable research tool for helping to interpret the quaternary fossil pollen record, allowing investigation of the relationship between pollen as the proxy and the environmental parameters such as vegetation, land-use, an ...

As anthropogenic N deposition has been suspected to be the main reason for the decline of macromycetous sporocarp production in forest ecosystems, various N-fertilization experiments were started in the mid 1990s. The dynamics of ectomycorrhizal (root-inha ...

A large-scale field experiment on the drying behavior of Norway Spruce (Picea abies Karst.) and Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) in relation to the felling date was conducted over a period of 24 weeks in order to investigate the existence of variatio ...

Our palaeoecological study covers 73 years of history (1929-2002) of a kettle hole peatland inundated by water from a nearby, dammed lake. Testate amoebae, pollen and non-pollen palynomorphs (NPPs) were used to track the shift to wetter conditions in the p ...

This paper presents a framework to simulate pollen dispersal by the wind based on the large eddy simulation(LES) technique. Important phenomena such as the pollen emission by the plants and the ground deposition are parameterized by the lower boundary cond ...

It is possible to construct Levy white noises as generalized random processes in the sense of Gel'fand and Vilenkin, or as an independently scattered random measures introduced by Rajput and Rosinski. In this article, we unify those two approaches by exten ...

Relevant source area of pollen (RSAP) and pollen productivity for 11 key taxa characteristic of the pasture woodland landscape of the Jura Mountains, Switzerland, were estimated using pollen assemblages from moss polsters at 20 sites. To obtain robust poll ...

Since myocardial fibers drive the electric signal propagation throughout the myocardium, accurately modeling their arrangement is essential for simulating heart electrophysiology (EP). Rule-Based-Methods (RBMs) represent a commonly used strategy to include ...

Profiles of the major sulfur functional groups in mature Norway spruce wood tissue have been established for the first time. The big challenge was the development of a method suitable for sulfur speciation in samples with very low sulfur content (

Field experiments were performed to study the diurnal cycle of corn pollen emission and its relation to local meteorological conditions, including temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, mean wind speed, and turbulence quantities. Pollen concentra ...

The ability of saplings to tolerate browsing (i.e. the ability to persist with reduced biomass and to compensate for biomass loss) is influenced by the level of stress and their growth strategies. Ultimately, insight into species-specific responses of sapl ...

Browsing by livestock has been identified as an important factor preventing tree regeneration in wooded pastures. Two field experiments were performed to investigate the effects of cattle browsing on tree sapling growth in a mountainwooded pasture. Two siz ...

The difficulty of obtaining annotations to build training databases still slows down the adoption of recent deep learning approaches for biomedical image analysis. In this paper, we show that we can train a Deep Net to perform 3D volumetric delineation giv ...

Wood-pastures are semi-natural, highly biodiverse systems maintained by traditional extensive agriculture. They are used for grazing and timber. The shifting mosaics of grassland, shrub thickets and woodland patches in these systems are driven by large her ...

For what we believe to be the first time, digital holographic microscopy is applied to perform optical diffraction tomography of a pollen grain. Transmission phase images with nanometric axial accuracy are numerically reconstructed from holograms acquired ...

The aim of this work is the investigation of mesoscale/local variability in mechanical properties of clear timber in the radial direction. Clear Norway spruce wood, Picea abies, was used for cutting specimens of different lengths with a small cross-section ...

In this work, the environmental impacts caused by an innovative upcycling process of printed plastic scrap have been assessed through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology for the first time. The process consists of removing the inks from the plastic surfa ...

This study is an attempt to evaluate the relationships between the vegetation and the modem pollen rain as a contribution to palaeoecological research. Pollen analysis of surface moss polsters and floristic records has been undertaken for 51 sampling point ...
