Reinforced concrete walls provide effective bracing against seismic lateral loading for buildings worldwide. In Latin America, seismic design provisions commonly adhere to the ACI 318 building code, which is predominantly based on United States constructio ...

The seismic assessment of existing steel structures necessitates the development of practice- oriented engineering models for use in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis procedures. These models should encompass the full range of the anticipated nonlinear ...

Observations from past earthquakes indicate that embedded column bases (ECBs) in steel moment resisting frames (MRFs) exhibited inelastic deformations while they were designed to be non-dissipative. Consequently, the amount of inelastic damage concentrated ...

Unreinforced masonry buildings with flexible timber floors are amongst the most vulnerable building typologies for seismic loading. Though flexible diaphragms play a role in the seismic behaviour of unreinforced masonry buildings, the impact of the connect ...

Embedded Column Base (ECB) connections in seismically resistant steel moment frames are commonly designed to be stronger than the connected column, to protect them from inelastic actions. This relies on estimation of demands induced by the column and the s ...

This paper introduces a new semi-active strategy for vibration control of truss and frame structures equipped with variable stiffness and damping joints which consist of a shape memory polymer (SMP) core reinforced by an SMP-aramid composite skin. When the ...

In 1356, Basel was subjected to an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.6; it is the largest known historical earthquake in central northern Europe. During this earthquake and the fire that followed large parts of Basel were destroyed. Such an event ...

Seismic assessment of existing heritage buildings remains a challenging task. There is a high level of complexity and uncertainty compared with the assessment of standard buildings. Heritage masonry churches are usually prone to partial collapses during ea ...

The paper presents the results of the evaluation of the seismic safety of the Ancien Hôpital de Sion, an important Swiss architectural heritage building, sited in the Canton of Valais, the region with the highest seismic hazard in Switzerland. Three-dimens ...

The severe damage and collapse of many reinforced concrete (RC) wall buildings in the recent earthquakes of Chile (2010) and New Zealand (2011) have shown that RC walls did not perform as well as required by the modern codes of both countries. It seems the ...

The recent re-assessment of the seismic hazard in Europe led for many regions of low to moderate seismicity to an increase in the seismic demand. As a consequence, several modern unreinforced masonry (URM) buildings, constructed with reinforced concrete (R ...

The purpose of this study is to investigate the role of filling materials (e.g., quartz sand and kaolin clay) in the interaction between a P-wave and a rock fracture. The specific fracture stiffness reflects the seismic response of a filled fracture, while ...

This work reports the outcomes of an extensive experimental campaign on the retrofitting of masonry walls by means of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, carried out at University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Fribourg. In the first stage, static-cy ...

Existing bridges may have been designed and constructed according to codes without any provisions for seismic design and detailing. Particularly in countries with moderate seismicity, such as Switzerland, modern seismic design standards might have been int ...

As an approach to the problem of seismic vulnerability evaluation of existing buildings using the predicted vulnerability method, numerical models can be applied to define fragility curves of typical buildings which represent building classes. These curves ...

Seismic risk in regions with moderate seismicity, such as Switzerland, was largely underestimated. A vast majority of existing buildings have been built without specific earthquake resistant features and do not meet modern requirements. Although several pr ...
