Design exploration consists in browsing the design space and through the incremental generation of diverse design candidates increases creativity and diversity. When integrated into the early stages of the structural design process, the task is expected to ...

Organocatalysis has evolved significantly over the last decades, becoming a pillar of synthetic chemistry, but traditional theoretical approaches based on quantum mechanical computations to investigate reaction mechanisms and provide rationalizations of ca ...

We consider the problem of provably finding a stationary point of a smooth function to be minimized on the variety of bounded-rank matrices. This turns out to be unexpectedly delicate. We trace the difficulty back to a geometric obstacle: On a nonsmooth se ...

Within the context of contemporary machine learning problems, efficiency of optimization process depends on the properties of the model and the nature of the data available, which poses a significant problem as the complexity of either increases ad infinit ...

This paper studies the problem of online performance optimization of constrained closed-loop control systems, where both the objective and the constraints are unknown black-box functions affected by exogenous time-varying contextual disturbances. A primal- ...

Social Engagement is a novel business model transforming final users of a service from passive into active components. In this framework, people are contacted by a company and they are asked to perform tasks in exchange for a reward. This arises the compli ...

We introduce a reconfigurable medium for the manipulation of elastic propagation properties of Lamb waves. It is based on a shape memory polymer (SMP) with temperature-dependent Young's modulus. Waves are excited by a laser pulse and detected by a laser vi ...

Pearl's do calculus is a complete axiomatic approach to learn the identifiable causal effects from observational data. When such an effect is not identifiable, it is necessary to perform a collection of often costly interventions in the system to learn the ...

Reaction optimization is challenging and traditionally delegated to domain experts who iteratively pro-pose increasingly optimal experiments. Problematically, the reaction landscape is complex and often requires hundreds of experiments to reach convergence ...

This paper proposes a Control by Interconnection design, for a class of constrained Port-Hamiltonian systems, which is based on an associated Model Predictive Control optimization problem. This associated optimization problem allows to consider both state ...

The monumental progress in the development of machine learning models has led to a plethora of applications with transformative effects in engineering and science. This has also turned the attention of the research community towards the pursuit of construc ...

This paper presents a novel distributed approach for solving AC power flow (PF) problems. The optimization problem is reformulated into a distributed form using a communication structure corresponding to a hypergraph, by which complex relationships between ...

Moving walkways are pedestrian dedicated hardware which generally decrease pedestrian travel time. We propose the utilization of these devices to dynamically control pedestrian flows in order to improve pedestrian dynamics. Three variations of a control st ...
