Optical biosensors offer significant advantages for minimally invasive in vivo and in vitro diagnostics. Optical sensors that are based on the fluorescence of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) especially benefit from a near-infrared (n ...

The stabilization and structural integrity of DNA architectures remain significant challenges in their biomedical applications, particularly when inserting functional units into the genome using long single-stranded DNA (lssDNA). To address these challenge ...

The neighbourhood unit is used extensively across numerous disciplines to empirically measure various urban characteristics and phenomena. Spatially heterogeneous system variables-e.g., environmental, sociodemographic, infrastructural etc.-create distinct ...

Architecture operates as an evolving interface that organises energy flows and stabilises material forms. It shapes the built environment by merging form with energy, creating spaces that resonate with occupants through sensory experiences, and by establis ...

The electrostatic screening properties of ionic fluids are of paramount importance in countless physical processes. Yet the screening behavior of ionic conductors out of thermal equilibrium has to date mainly been studied in the context of thermoelectric p ...

Motivated by the resistive switchings in transition-metal oxides (TMOs) induced by a voltage bias, we study the far-from-equilibrium dynamics of an electric-field-driven strongly correlated model featuring a first-order insulator-to-metal transition at equ ...

We report on a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the N(D-2) + C6H6 (benzene) reaction, which is of relevance in the aromatic chemistry of the atmosphere of Titan. Experimentally, the reaction was studied (i) under single-collision cond ...

Data from the Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC) expedition allowed us to investigate the temporal dynamics of snowfall, snow accumulation and erosion in great detail for almost the whole accumulation season (No ...

Motivated by the lack of direct evidence with inelastic neutron scattering of the well documented bound state of Heisenberg ferromagnets, we use the time-dependent thermal density matrix renormalization group algorithm to study the temperature dependence o ...

Atomistic simulations provide insights into structure-property relations on an atomic size and length scale, that are complementary to the macroscopic observables that can be obtained from experiments. Quantitative predictions, however, are usually hindere ...

Recent theory proposes that edge dislocations in random body-centered cubic (BCC) high entropy alloys have high barriers for motion, conveying high strengths up to high temperatures. Here, the energy barriers for edge motion are computed for two model allo ...

Two-phase micro-scale cooling implemented with passive, gravity-driven closed-loop thermosyphons represents a highly-reliable solution to increase heat dissipation and to maximize energy efficiency of the next-generation electronics cooling technologies. T ...

Photoelectrochemical water splitting is a promising source of clean, renewable fuel in the form of hydrogen. Despite extensive research endeavors, the widespread adoption of this technology is impeded due to suboptimal catalysts for the oxygen evolution re ...

In recent years, the notion of 'Quantum Materials' has emerged as a powerful unifying concept across diverse fields of science and engineering, from condensed-matter and coldatom physics to materials science and quantum computing. Beyond traditional quantu ...

Thermodynamic observables of mesoscopic systems can be expressed as integrated empirical currents. Their fluctuations are bound by thermodynamic uncertainty relations. We introduce the hyperaccurate current as the integrated empirical current with the leas ...

Unsteady radiative heat transfer is analyzed numerically in a directly irradiated plane-parallel medium containing a suspension of ceria particles undergoing nonstoichiometric thermal reduction. The micrometer-sized ceria particles are assumed homogenous, ...

Quantum states cohere and interfere. Atoms arranged imperfectly in a solid rarely display these properties. Here we demonstrate an exception in a disordered quantum magnet that divides itself into nearly isolated subsystems. We probe these coherent spin cl ...

We have used exact numerical diagonalization to study the excitation spectrum and the dynamic spin correlations in the s = 1/2 next-next-nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice, with additional four-spin ring exchange from higher- ...

Malaria puts at risk of infection half of the world population and still kills around half a million people every year. The rapid and worrisome rise of drug-resistant malaria parasites hinders the treatment of malaria and calls for a global collaboration t ...

Most syntheses of thiolate-protected metal nanoparticles (NPs) include a thermochemical step in which the as-prepared, polydisperse NPs are transformed to a narrower size distribution in a poorly understood process known as digestive ripening (DR). Previou ...
