Nature produces soft materials with fascinating combinations of mechanical properties. For example, the mussel byssus embodies a combination of stiffness and toughness, a feature that is unmatched by synthetic hydrogels. Key to enabling these excellent mec ...

Gels made of telechelic polymers connected by reversible cross-linkers are a versatile design platform for biocompatible viscoelastic materials. Their linear response to a step strain displays a fast, near-exponential relaxation when using low-valence cros ...

Ionically crosslinked hydrogels containing metal coordination motifs have piqued the interest of researchers in recent decades due to their self-healing and adhesive properties. In particular, catechol-functionalized bulk hydrogels have received a lot of a ...

Inspired by the cellular design of plant tissue, we present an approach to make versatile, tough, highly water-swelling composites. We embed highly swelling hydrogel particles inside tough, water-permeable, elastomeric matrices. The resulting composites, w ...

Throughout nature, organisms fabricate a myriad of materials to sustain their lifestyle. Many of the soft materials are composed of water-swollen networks of organic molecules, so-called hydrogels. They generally contribute to the mechanical integrity of t ...

Polymer brushes are a specific class of polymer thin films in which each chain is tethered to the underlying substrate via one chain end. In sufficiently densely grafted assemblies, the individual polymer chains are forced into an extended chain conformati ...

Modifying the properties of bio-based materials has garnered increasing interest in recent years. In related applications, the ability of alginates to complex with metal ions has been shown to be effective in liquid-to-gel transitions, useful in the develo ...

Surface-initiated polymerization reactions are a powerful tool to generate chain-end-tethered polymer brushes. This report presents a synthetic strategy that gives access to structurally well-defined hydrocarbon polymer brushes of controlled molecular weig ...

Metal-coordinated hydrogels are physical hydrogels entirely crosslinked by complexes between ligand decorated polymers and metal ions. The mechanical properties of these hydrogels strongly depend on the density and dynamics of metal-coordinated interaction ...

Cell therapy could be a solution for many diseases that currently pose a huge health burden on patients. Especially, cell therapies based on cell microencapsulation are of great interest. Immunoprotection of cells would allow to avoid the need for immunosu ...

Smart nanofibrillar constructs can be a promising technological solution for many emerging and established fields, facilitating the potential impact of nano-scale strategies to address relevant technological challenges. As a fabrication technique, electros ...

Nowadays, the development of cell therapy relies mainly on the advances made toward cell microencapsulation which allows to evade the need for immunosuppression during cell transplantation. Among the materials considered for cell encapsulation, hydrogels d ...

Despite the development of hydrogels with high mechanical properties, insufficient adhesion between these materials and biological surfaces significantly limits their use in the biomedical field. By controlling toughening processes, we designed a composite ...

At low pH, underwater adherence between poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) hydrogels and poly(acrylic acid) brushes is due to the formation of multiple hydrogen bonds. The effect of the key parameters controlling the formation of these interactions (contact time ...

The production of hydrogel microspheres (MS) for cell immobilization, maintaining the favorable properties of alginate gels but presenting enhanced performance in terms of in vivo durability and physical properties, is desirable to extend the therapeutic p ...

Replacing the gel-like central part of the intervertebral disc (IVD), so-called nucleus pulposus (NP), via a minimally invasive surgery is one of the most recent approaches in the lower back pain treatments. An appropriate biomaterial for NP replacement (N ...

Valorization of CO2, an abundant C(1) synthon, into platform chemicals is of growing interest. In this context, a key reaction is the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides to form carbonates (CCE). A series of organocatalysts for this reaction, based on imidazo ...

Two novel types of hydrogel microspheres (MS) are presented. First, one-component microspheres (1-comMS) were produced from sodium alginate (Na-alg) equipped with thiolfunctionalized hydroxyl groups. The functionalization pathway included the conversion of ...

With proper control over copolymer design and solvation conditions, self-assembled materials display impressive morphological variety that encompasses nanoscale colloids as well as bulk three-dimensional architectures. Here we take advantage of both hydrop ...

From the experimental analysis of the photocuring process in terms of reaction kinetics as well as modulus and shrinkage build-up, the residual stresses arising during the photopolymerization of functionally graded composite coatings based on an acrylate m ...
