How can one construct spatial histories and architectural theories from gestures, words and voices, bodies and minor threads? This research delves into oral and embodied architectural and spatial knowledge as modes of producing buildings, spaces and spati ...

Structural engineers play an increasing role in ensuring the transition towards a more sustainable construction sector: a) they are responsible for the design of the most resource- and energy-intensive part of buildings and infrastructure, and b) they regu ...

Grid cells are place-modulated neurons that encode the location of an agent in space, relying on the integration of various sensorimotor signals from the body. Of note, the integration of those signals is also fundamental for the agent's conscious experien ...

Shell buckling is central in many biological structures and advanced functional materials, even if, traditionally, this elastic instability has been regarded as a catastrophic phenomenon to be avoided for engineering structures. Either way, predicting crit ...

The emergence of digital technology is changing education in many ways. A particularly interesting aspect of this transformation is the development of learning environments that can automatically adapt to individual students and can collect data in order t ...

Exposure to adversity during early life can have profound influences on brain function and behavior later in life. The peripubertal period is emerging as an important time-window of susceptibility to stress, with substantial evidence documenting long-term ...

This paper presents structural optimization techniques to design truss structures that make best use of a given stock of structural components. Still little explored, the reuse of structural components over multiple service lives has the potential to signi ...

Adaptive structures can modify their shape and internal forces through sensing and actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Substantial whole-life energy can be saved with respect to traditional passive designs through wel ...

Adaptive structures have the ability to modify their shape and internal forces through sensing and actuation in order to maintain optimal performance under changing actions. Previous studies have shown that substantial whole-life energy savings with respec ...

We present a computational model of spatial navigation comprising different learning mechanisms in mammals, i.e., associative, cognitive mapping and parallel systems. This model is able to reproduce a large number of experimental results in different varia ...

Tensegrity structures have non-conventional structural properties since they require self-stress in order to be stable. When a tensegrity structure integrates sensors, actuators, (structural members able to change their length) and a control system, deploy ...

Cyclic peptides binding to targets of interest can be generated efficiently with powerful in vitro display techniques, such as phage display or mRNA display. The cyclic peptide libraries screened with these methods are generated by altering in a combinator ...

Learning analytics (LA) is often considered as a means to improve learning and learning environments by measuring student behaviour, analysing the tracked data and acting upon the results. The use of LA tools implies recording and processing of student act ...

Stress can affect cognition in many ways, with the outcome (i.e., facilitating or impairing) depending on a combination of factors related to both stress and the cognitive function under study. Among the factors identified as particularly relevant to defin ...

This paper presents a methodology that improves fatigue-performance evaluations using model-based data interpretation. The accuracy of stress-range values is essential for quantifying fatigue damage. These values are usually predicted using physics-based m ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are increasingly used in many load-bearing structures. Joints are the most critical structural elements as they often become the weak links in engineering structures. Bonding and bolting are two of the main joini ...

We live in a rapidly changing digital world marked by technological advances, and fraught with online information constantly growing thanks to the Internet revolution and the online social applications in particular. Formal learning acquired in traditional ...

Intensive research over the past few years has provided evidence, that stress is a potent modulator of brain function and cognition. In particular cognitive and emotional processes have been shown to be susceptible to modulation by stress. Whereas acute st ...

Navigation is defined as the capability of planning and performing a path from the current position towards a desired location. Different types, or strategies, of navigation are used by animals depending on the task they are trying to solve. Visible goals ...

Animals behave in different ways depending on the specific task they are required to solve. In certain cases, if a cue marks the goal location, they can rely on simple stimulusresponse associations. In contrast, other tasks require the animal to be endowed ...
