The use of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations has led to promising results to unravel the atomistic origins of adhesive wear, and in particular for the onset of wear at nanoscale surface asperities. However, MD simulations come with a high computational c ...

We investigate the load transmission along an elastic rod of finite cross-section in contact with a rigid cylinder, as system often referred to as the generalized capstan problem. In the presence of friction, the idealized classic capstan equation predicts ...

In order to develop predictive wear laws, relevant material parameters and their influence on the wear rate need to be identified. Despite decades of research, there is no agreement on the mathematical form of wear equations and even the simplest models, s ...

We perform a combined experimental and computational investigation of the clove hitch knot. We develop a physical model for the clove hitch by tying an elastic rod onto a rigid cylinder. In the experiments, we characterize the mechanical performance, geome ...

Beyond their original capability to grab and hold tiny objects, optical tweezers have emerged as a powerful tool to investigate fundamental physics at microscopic scales. A precise characterization of the optical trap is one of the key requirements in such ...

The Kunsthal in Rotterdam is a key work in the oeuvre of OMA/Rem Koolhaas that marks the threshold between the firmâ s architectural production of the decades before and after 1990. This doctoral thesis aims at a deeper and comprehensive understanding of ...

The optimization of surface finish to improve performance, such as adhesion, friction, wear, fatigue life, or interfacial transport, occurs largely through trial and error, despite significant advancements in the relevant science. There are three central c ...

Strength in numbers, combining many weak interactions into an overall strong connection, is the fundamental principle of multivaleny. This concept has been exploiting for the engineering of super-selective cell-targeting materials, which generally display ...

When two solids start rubbing together, frictional sliding initiates in the wake of slip fronts propagating along their surfaces in contact. This macroscopic rupture dynamics can be successfully mapped on the elastodynamics of a moving shear crack. However ...

While sliding at seismic slip-rates of ∼1 m/s, natural faults undergo an abrupt decrease of shear stress called dynamic weakening. Asperity-scale processes related to flash heating and weakening and, meso-scale (mm-cm) processes involving shear across the ...

This study presents an improvement of an existing tribocorrosion model developed for passive CoCrMo alloys. This model is based on an empirical formalism established by Duncan Dowson in his pioneering works on the relation between wear and elasto-hydrodyna ...

The concentration-mass (c-M) relation encodes key information about the assembly history of dark matter halos. However, its behavior at the high mass end has not been measured precisely in observations yet. In this paper, we report the measurement of the h ...
