Cyclic peptides are fascinating molecules abundantly found in nature and exploited as molecular format for drug development as well as other applications, ranging from research tools to food additives. Advances in peptide technologies made over many years ...

Retinoblastoma is a rare childhood cancer of the eye. Of the small number of drugs are used to treat retinoblastoma, all have been repurposed from drugs developed for other conditions. In order to find drugs or drug combinations better suited to the improv ...

Chemical space maps help visualize similarities within molecular sets. However, there are many different molecular similarity measures resulting in a confusing number of possible comparisons. To overcome this limitation, we exploit the fact that tools desi ...

Retinoblastoma, while relatively rare, stands as the most prevalent intraocular cancer. In Switzerland, the survival rate approaches 100%, but it drops to less than 50% in low-income countries. The current treatment options for retinoblastoma rely on a lim ...

Anti-cancer therapies often exhibit only short-term effects. Tumors typically develop drug resistance causing relapses that might be tackled with drug combinations. Identification of the right combination is challenging and would benefit from high-content, ...

Peptides have a number of attractive properties that make them an interesting modality for drug development, including their ability to bind challenging targets, their high target specificity, and their non-toxic metabolic products. However, a major limita ...

Drops are omnipresent in our daily life for example in the form of rain drops or as oil drops in a salad dressing. On a technological basis, drops can be used to conduct chemical or biological reactions. These drops often serve as templates to produce mate ...

Metal-based drugs and imaging agents are extensively used in the clinic for the treatment and diagnosis of cancers and a wide range of other diseases. The current clinical arsenal of compounds operate via a limited number of mechanisms, whereas new putativ ...

Controlled drug release is a promising pathway of biomedicine, meant to suppress side effects with the aim of increasing patient's comfort. A route to achieve this goal represents the encapsulation of drugs into matrixes, capable to develop physical forces ...

For clinical applications, simplicity, high efficiency, and low toxicity are key issues in the design of anti-tumor drugs. In this work, a novel dual-responsive drug self-framed delivery system (DSFDS) with high drug delivery efficiency is proposed based o ...

The organometallic ruthenium(II) [Ru(arene)Cl2PTA] PTA - 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane compound, RAPTA-C, represents an innovative anti-cancer therapeutic and a better-tolerated alternative to platinum (Pt)-based chemotherapeutic drugs in the treatment ...

A significant number of drugs exhibit narrow therapeutic windows and high inter-individual pharmacokinetic variability. In such cases, Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is compulsory in order to optimize the efficacy of the drug while avoiding adverse effe ...

The efficacy of the standardized four-drug regimen (comprising isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide, and ethambutol) for the treatment of tuberculosis (TB) is menaced by the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drugresistant (XDR) strains of ...

Platinum drugs are extensively used in the clinic to treat cancer, often leading to a palliative response rather than a cure. While DNA is considered to be the primary target of platinum drugs, there is no clear relationship between cellular platinum accum ...

Improved sensitivity and continuous monitoring of therapeutic compounds are two of the most highlighted concerns for the treatment of malignant diseases, such as cancer. We demonstrated ultrasensitive screening of etoposide, a therapeutic compound widely-u ...

Tuberculosis (TB), whose etiological agent is Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis), has plagued humanity since antiquity. Even with chemotherapy available today, TB is the leading cause of death due to an infectious disease. Modern day factors, suc ...

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment is confounded by the range of metabolic states displayed by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, by the long duration required and by the increasing prevalence of drug-resistant strains. Latent TB infection is especially difficult to tre ...

Mass spectrometry imaging is being increasingly used in metal-based anticancer drug development to study elemental and/or molecular drug distributions in different biological systems. The main analytical tools employed are SIMS (especially nanoSIMS), LA-IC ...

Herein we show that oxaliplatin reacts rapidly with DMSO in aqueous solutions, despite being stable in pure DMSO and pure water. Furthermore, the reactivity of the clinically applied Pt(II) drugs in water/DMSO and PBS/DMSO mixtures, and the nature of the s ...

Following the identification of a ruthenium(II)-arene complex with an ethacrynic acid-modified imidazole ligand, which inhibits glutathione transferase (GST) and is cytotoxic to chemo-resistant cancer cells, a series of structurally related ruthenium(II)- ...
