We study continuous-domain linear inverse problems that involve a general data-fidelity term and a regularisation term. We consider a regularisation that is formed by the sparsity-promoting total-variation norm, pre-composed with a differential operator th ...

In a previous paper, a new gyrokinetic quasilinear model was proposed to study turbulent momentum transport in tokamaks with up-down asymmetric plasma shaping and toroidal flow shear (Sun et al 2024 Nuclear Fusion 64 036026). In this work, we start by appl ...

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is an important tool for the simulation of the cardiovascular function and dysfunction. Due to the complexity of the anatomy, the transitional regime of blood flow in the heart, and the strong mutual influence between the ...

We present a numerical method specifically designed for simulating three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems based on the reference map technique (RMT). The RMT is a fully Eulerian FSI numerical method that allows fluids and large-deform ...

A model to describe the transport across membranes of chemical species dissolved in an incompressible flow is developed via homogenization. The asymptotic matching between the microscopic and macroscopic solute concentration fields leads to a solute flux j ...

Steep streams involve shallow, supercritical turbulent flows over a permeable bed made up of coarse particles. They usually exhibit higher flow resistance and stronger mass and momentum exchanges between the stream and subsurface flow than low-gradient str ...

We construct an idealized computational model of the left human heart for the study of the blood flow dynamics in the left atrium and ventricle. We solve the Navier-Stokes equations in the ALE formulation and we prescribe the left heart wall displacement b ...

We consider finite element error approximations of the steady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations defined on a randomly perturbed domain, the perturbation being small. Introducing a random mapping, these equations are transformed into PDEs on a fixed re ...

The plastic flow of amorphous materials displays non-local effects, characterized by a cooperativity length scale xi. We argue that these effects enter in the more general description of surface phenomena near critical points. Using this approach, we obtai ...

A numerical model to show the impact of the adsorption bed geometry on the desulfurization process of wet biomass under supercritical water (SCW) gasification process has been developed. Three different geometries, straight channels (pipe), sharp-edged cha ...

This thesis addresses the development and implementation of efficient and parallel algorithms for the numerical simulation of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems in hemodynamics. Indeed, hemodynamic conditions in large arteries are significantly aff ...

The aim of the present research is to identify, describe and quantify the principal mechanic-hydraulic relationships during hydraulic transients in pressurized pipe flows in view of improving pipe design and reduce pipe and system failure. Phenomena affect ...

Objectives(i) To assess the effects of mechanical overloading on implant integration in rat tibiae, and (ii) to numerically predict peri-implant bone adaptation. Materials and methodsTranscutaneous titanium implants were simultaneously placed into both tib ...

This paper is concerned with the mathematical analysis of a coupled elliptic–parabolic system modeling the interaction between the propagation of electric potential and subsequent deformation of the cardiac tissue. The problem consists in a reaction–diffus ...

In this paper, we consider the numerical approximation of high order Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) by means of NURBS-based Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) in the framework of the Galerkin method, for which global smooth basis functions with degree of c ...

The hydrothermal ageing of glass/epoxy interface is investigated using an experimental numerical approach on cylindrical epoxy specimens with centrally located optical fibers. A 24 mm long Bragg grating sensor is inscribed on the optical fiber and used to ...

In this work we deal with the numerical solution of the fluid-structure interaction problem arising in the haemodynamic environment. In particular, we consider BDF and Newmark time discretization schemes, and we study different methods for the treatment of ...

The aim of the present thesis is to provide a numerical tool for the mechanical modeling of dynamic failure in concrete. This widely used construction material is characterized by a non-linear failure behavior, which is consequently difficult to describe w ...

In recent years, the complexity of geomechanical problems has greatly increased as a result of the demand for new and intricate types of applications. Experimental characterization and numerical prediction by means of multiphysical approaches are in that c ...

The aim of this work is the development of a geometrical multiscale framework for the simulation of the human cardiovascular system under either physiological or pathological conditions. More precisely, we devise numerical algorithms for the partitioned so ...
