Static axial induction control and tilt control are two strategies that have the potential to increase power production in wind farms, mitigating wake effects and increasing the available power for downstream turbines. In this study, wind tunnel experiment ...

In this thesis, we explore the best practice of simulating the wakes of the turbines under active yaw control (AYC) using large-eddy simulation (LES). In the first study, we validate the blade-element actuator disk model (ADM-BE) for a yawed wind turbine. ...

Large Eddy Simulations (LES) of atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) flow with the actuator disc (AD) for turbine modelling is a widely used method of simulating wind farm flows. Hence, it is important to understand the requirements for achieving a good compar ...

According to the International Energy Agency, the global net-zero emissions objective requires the installed wind power capacity to increase 11-fold between 2020 and 2050. The scientific community has recently voiced concerns about the logistic feasibility ...

Vertical-axis wind turbines are excellent candidates to diversify wind energy technology, but their aerodynamic complexity limits industrial deployment. To improve the efficiency and lifespan of vertical-axis wind turbines, we desire data-driven models and ...

In this thesis, the aerodynamic challenges in flapping wing flight are addressed. In particular, the effects of different wing kinematics, flexibilities, and planforms on the the leading edge vortex development and aerodynamic performance are investigated. ...

This work is dedicated to the systematic investigation of wind turbine wakes under the effect of pressure gradients. Wind tunnel experiments are carried out with a wind turbine positioned on straight ramps of increasing angle such that it experiences an ap ...

This study investigated the power production and blade fatigue of a three-turbine array subjected to active yaw control (AYC) in full-wake and partial-wake configurations. A framework of a two-way coupled large eddy simulation (LES) and an aeroelastic blad ...

Analytical wind turbine wake models are widely used to predict the wake velocity deficit. In these models, the wake growth rate is a key parameter specified mainly with empirical formulations. In this study, a new physics-based model is proposed and valida ...

This work presents an optimization framework to aggregate the power and energy flexibilities in an interconnected power distribution systems. The aggregation framework is used to compute the day-ahead dispatch plans of multiple and interconnected distribut ...

In this study, the wake behind a wind turbine located on an escarpment is investigated using particle-image velocimetry in a wind tunnel. Five different escarpment models are used, which vary in the windward side shape from forward facing steps (FFS) with ...

Electric vehicles (EVs) are already part of today's reality and their number is expected to grow rapidly in the near future. A large-scale penetration of EVs will increase the power consumption during charging periods. Hence, the uncoordinated and random c ...

Having sufficient grid-forming sources is one of the necessary conditions to guarantee the stability in a power system hosting a very large share of inverter-based generation. The grid-forming function has been historically fulfilled by synchronous machine ...

The extensive deployment of non-synchronous generation determines lower level of grid inertia resulting in deteriorated frequency containment performance and abnormal frequency excursions in case of contingency. This calls for identifying assets, controls, ...

It is well-known that the morphology of urban areas modifies the variations of climate variables at microscale; known as microclimate conditions. The complexity of urban morphology can lead to undesired wind conditions or excessive air temperature; particu ...

In Part I, a method for the Harmonic Power-Flow (HPF) study of three-phase power grids with Converter-Interfaced Distributed Energy Resources (CIDERs) is proposed. The method is based on generic and modular representations of the grid and the CIDERs, and e ...

Indo-Swiss Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP) is a cooperation project between the Ministry of Power, Government of India, and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation. Started in 2011, the project's central focus is to h ...

Urban canopy models (UCMs) developed based on Prandtl mixing-length theory provide a simple method for predicting urban flows. In the existing models, the Prandtl mixing length and the sectional drag coefficient of buildings are usually assumed to be unifo ...

In this study, stereo particle imaging velocimetry measurements are performed at multiple streamwise locations behind a yawed wind turbine to reveal the formation mechanisms of the counter-rotating vortex pair (CVP), and a point vortex transportation (PVT) ...

Problem definition: Vehicle-to-grid increases the low utilization rate of privately owned electric vehicles by making their batteries available to electricity grids. We formulate a robust optimization problem that maximizes a vehicle owner’s expected profi ...
