Reinforcement detailing rules describe the shape, geometrical dimensions, and amount of steel to be placed in reinforced concrete structures. They allow for simple and fast designs, account for several effects neglected in the design, ensure a satisfactory ...

The seismic assessment of existing steel structures necessitates the development of practice- oriented engineering models for use in nonlinear static and dynamic analysis procedures. These models should encompass the full range of the anticipated nonlinear ...

The minimum amount of shear reinforcement to be provided in reinforced concrete members has been a topic of debate and research for decades without reaching a consensus. Defining such values is however instrumental to build in an economic manner and to saf ...

Conventional formworks for concrete curved shells either are expensive, complex and wasteful or have formal restrictions. Using tile vaults (also known as timbrel, Guastavino, thin-tile or Catalan vaults) as stay-in-place formwork for concrete shells could ...

Redistribution of shear forces in reinforced concrete members without shear reinforcement is a key aspect for the assessment of the shear capacity of wide beams and slabs. Such redistributions are due to the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete (both ...

Reinforced concrete planar members, as slabs and shells, are structural elements commonly used in the construction technique, which are typically designed without the arrangement of shear reinforcement. Despite the fact that this solution allows for fast a ...

Ultra-High-Performance Fibre Reinforced Cementitious Composite (UHPFRC) has recently been used to design lightweight structures and strengthen existing ones, with more than 300 applications in Switzerland. Several composite timber-UHPFRC bridges have been ...

The concept of post-tensioned glass beams builds on the concrete analogy of the reinforced glass beams. By additionally prestressing the reinforcement in a post-tensioned system, a compressive pre-stress is applied on the glass, enhancing the initial fract ...

As floors typically account for the largest share of a building embodied carbon footprint, new strategies to build low-carbon floors must be developed and implemented. Among these strategies, the reuse of existing components is a promising circular approac ...

The Eurocode 2 for the design of concrete structures (EN1992-1-1:2004) is undergoing a revision that will lead to the publication of the second generation of this code to be used across all CEN member countries. Therefore, the impact of the code will reach ...

The behavior of reinforced-concrete structural elements under moving loads involves many complex parameters related to material properties, vehicle loading, environmental changes and structural response. It is difficult to generate the real conditions of l ...

Practices that reuse concrete pieces in new building or infrastructure projects are currently diversifying as concrete reuse gains more and more relevance for sustainability. The present research provides a yet missing identification of the main approaches ...

The use of punching shear reinforcement is currently considered as one of the most convenient practices to enhance the punching shear strength and deformation capacity of slab-column connections in flat slabs. Intensive research has been performed in the l ...

Snow slab avalanches release after the failure and collapse of a weak layer buried below a cohesive snow slab. The initial failure is induced by local overloading of the slab, such that the passage of a skier. This results in the propagation of a subsidenc ...

The development of a robust material model able to accurately describe fibre bed compaction at different strain and strain rates is highly desirable because it is essential for the simulation of many composite manufacturing processes. In this study, we inv ...
