The complex mechanics of porous and granular media play a significant role in various industrial processes and natural phenomena. As an example, understanding the mechanics of how failure occurs, localizes and propagates in porous brittle solids under vari ...

Amorphous solids are structurally disordered. They are very common and include glasses, colloids, and granular materials, but are far less understood than crystalline solids. Key aspects of these materials are controlled by the presence of excitations in w ...

Solid-like behavior at low energies and long distances is usually associated with the spontaneous breaking of spatial translations at microscopic scales, as in the case of a lattice of atoms. We exhibit three quantum field theories that are renormalizable, ...

We consider a multiscale strategy addressing the disparate scales in the Landau-Lifschitz equations in micromagnetism. At the microscopic scale, the dynamics of magnetic moments are driven by a high frequency field. On the macroscopic scale we are interest ...

Transition metal compounds represent a unique class of solids characterized by a surprising richness of physical properties. They display many phenomena and represent the main area of interest for the research on strongly correlated materials. Many novel i ...

The paper proposes a study of the phenomenology driving the ageing mechanisms of electrochemical double layer supercapacitors (SCs) during their most common operating conditions. In particular, the paper focuses on the so-called life endurance (LE) and pow ...

Iron is a material of fundamental importance in the industrial and economic processes of our society as it is the major constituent of steels. With advances in computational science, much progress has been made in the understanding of the microscopic mecha ...

This paper describes a novel and scalable method for the fabrication of polymer derived ceramics (PDC) structures with high aspect ratio and micrometre scale features. Elastomeric micro-moulds composed of a filling pot are used to deliver via sacrificial m ...

The hydrothermal ageing of glass/epoxy interface is investigated using an experimental numerical approach on cylindrical epoxy specimens with centrally located optical fibers. A 24 mm long Bragg grating sensor is inscribed on the optical fiber and used to ...

The wetting of angular alumina particle preforms by Cu-Sn alloys is investigated by means of pressure infiltration experiments conducted at 1150 A degrees C, using a system enabling dynamic and precise measurements of the metal volume injected into the pre ...

This paper concerns a model of bed load transport, which describes the advection and dispersion of coarse particles carried by a turbulent water stream. The challenge is to develop a microstructural approach that, on the one hand, yields a parsimonious des ...

Phase change materials are of great interest as active layers in rewritable optical disks and novel electronic nonvolatile memories. These applications rest on a fast and reversible transformation between the amorphous and crystalline phases upon heating, ...

Transparent polycrystalline alumina has many possible promising areas of application from jewelry and the watch industry to wave guides, energy economical lamp envelopes, and optical windows. Ultrahigh density, submicron sized grains and/or oriented micros ...

Silicon nitride based ceramics (SiAlONs); tetragonal polycrystalline zirconia (3Y‐TZP); alumina and their composites reinforced with different amount of multi‐ walled carbon‐nanotubes (CNTs) have been processed by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS). High tempera ...

Modeling work in neuroscience can be classified using two different criteria. The first one is the complexity of the model, ranging from simplified conceptual models that are amenable to mathematical analysis to detailed models that require simulations in ...

In this article, we describe a dynamic model of the three-dimensional eel swimming. This model is analytical and suited to the online control of eel-like robots. The proposed solution is based on the Large Amplitude Elongated Body Theory of Lighthill and a ...

The temperature is known to influence the strength and durability of concrete. Temperature has also a great influence on the creep of cementitious materials. Previous investigations have not provided a complete understanding of these effects; in particular ...

A large body of work has been reported in the last 5 years on the development of lead-free piezoceramics in the quest to replace lead–zirconate–titanate (PZT) as the main material for electromechanical devices such as actuators, sensors, and transducers. I ...

The behaviour of brittle matrix fibre reinforced-composites is dependent of the properties of its constituents (fibre, matrix and fibre-matrix interface) and is affected by the mechanical and environmental loads. The fracture of a unidirectional composite ...

Three types of biomaterials based on hydroxyapatite are synthesized and investigated. Hydroxyapatite nanocrystals or microcrystals precipitated from low-temperature aqueous solutions serve as the initial material used for preparing spherical porous granule ...
