Stable carbon and hydrogen isotopes of wood methoxy groups (δ2Hmeth, δ13Cmeth), mainly sourced by structural biomolecules like lignin and pectin, provide important insights into climatic, hydrological and physiological conditions. This study systematically ...

Certain metal oxides exhibit unique phases and associated properties that can generally only be accessed via high temperature treatments. However, high temperature processes usually lead to surface reconstruction and pore collapse, which reduces the active ...

Snow-farming is one of the adaptive strategies used to face the snow deficit in ski resorts. We studied the impact of a shifting snow-farming technique on a pasture slope in Adelboden, Switzerland. Specifically, we compared plots covered by a compressed sn ...

Carbon nanostructures formed through physical synthesis come in a variety of sizes and shapes. With the end goal of rationalizing synthetic pathways of carbon nanostructures as a function of tunable parameters in the synthesis, we investigate how the initi ...

In hardwater lakes, calcite precipitation is an important yet poorly understood process in the lacustrine carbon cycle, in which catchment-derived alkalinity (Alk) is both transformed and translocated. While the physico-chemical conditions supporting the s ...

This study explores the drivers of aerosol pH and their impact on the inorganic fraction and mass of aerosol in the S.E. Canadian urban environments of Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario. We find that inter-seasonal pH variability is mostly driven by temperatur ...

The use of carbon ions in particle therapy can enhance the treatment quality, introducing higher biological effectiveness compared to photons and protons. Rotating gantries are nowadays used to deliver particle beams from different directions to obtain pre ...

Organic species within atmospheric particles vary widely in molecular structure. The variety of molecules that comprise the aerosol make it rich in information about its sources and chemical life cycle but also make particulate organic matter (OM) difficul ...

In nanocrystalline diamond thin films, the high grain boundary density and the associated grain boundary properties may dominate the overall material behavior. In the present work, we systematically investigate (111) twist grain boundaries in diamond carbo ...

Alkali-intercalated graphite compounds represent a compelling modification of carbon with significant application potential and various fundamentally important phases. The intercalation of graphite with alkali atoms (Li and K) using liquid ammonia solution ...

Altitudinal gradients are useful to study the potential effects of climate change on ecosystems. Historically, studies on elevation gradients have primarily focused on macro-organisms and ecosystem processes, while microorganisms have been mostly ignored d ...

Graphite is a highly anisotropic crystal with a quasi-two-dimensional electronic structure exhibiting high intrinsic charge carrier mobility. Here, we investigate the effect of an electric field on the resistance of individual graphite crystallites with a ...

2,2′-Bipyridine (bipy) and an imidazolium-functionalized bipy ligand were used in the synthesis of palladium nanoparticles in water and in ionic liquid. The function of such ligands was twofold: first, as stabilizing agents to prevent the agglomeration of ...

This paper reports the results of the first dynamic labeling experiment with regenerating spines of sea urchins Paracentrotus lividus using the stable isotope Mg-26 and NanoSIMS high-resolution isotopic imaging, which provide a direct information about the ...

Highly conductive chemically derived graphene can be synthesized using an efficient two-step method starting from graphene oxide. The key strategy involves the use of a CVD process to heal defects contained within the monolayers, which imparts a two order ...

The main focus of this work is fuel retention in plasma components of the JET water-cooled Mk-I divertors operated with small tiles, first with carbon fibre composite (CFC) and then with castellated beryllium. Until recently these have been the only large- ...

The main objectives of this work are 2-fold : The development of a novel type of composite material based on carbon nanofibers supported on sintered metal fibers filters (CNF/SMF) and to explore the use of this material as a catalytic support for a model r ...
