Background: Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the humeral capitellum is an important cause of elbow disability in young athletes. Large and unstable lesions sometimes require joint reconstruction with osteochondral autograft. Several approaches have been ...

One of the most common knee injuries is the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) rupture with severe implications on knee stability. The usual treatment is the ACL Reconstruction (ACLR) surgery where the surgeon replaces the torn ligament with a graft in an ef ...

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is widely regarded as the primary modality for the morphological assessment of cartilage and all other joint tissues involved in osteoarthritis. 2D fast spin echo fat-suppressed intermediate-weighted (FSE FS IW) sequences w ...

Mobility impairments are a common symptom of age-related degenerative diseases. Gait features can discriminate those with mobility disorders from healthy individuals, yet phenotyping specific pathologies remains challenging. This study aims to identify if ...

Origami robots composed of rigid parts with flexible joints have inherent compliance that enables deployment and reconfiguration for various shape adaptations. The major drawback of such mechanical compliance is its intrinsic softness and lack of controlla ...

In this work the differences in R-curve response and traction-separation relations due to a finite damage zone or large-scale bridging (LSB) in mode I fracture on double cantilever beams (DCB) were investigated under end opening forces (EOF) and pure momen ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) structures, due to their low mass, are valuable alternatives to traditional steel or concrete structures in seismic areas. However, to resist seismic actions, FRP structures must be able to dissipate a significant amount of i ...

This paper presents design and characterization of a new type of structural joint which can vary its stiffness through actuation. Stiffness variation is employed to control the dynamic response of frame structures equipped with such joints. The joint is ma ...

This paper presents a new strategy to control the structure dynamic response via a shift of the natural frequencies obtained through using variable stiffness joints. The joints are made of shape memory polymers and are fabricated through 3D printing. Stiff ...

Due to its limited regeneration capacity, articular cartilage defects are considered a frequent clinical problem. Initial cartilage defects, if left untreated, will progress in severity over time and can eventually lead to degenerative joint diseases such ...

This study analyses the damage tolerance of nanofibre interleaved composites when subjected to low velocity impact. Cross-ply glass/epoxy composite laminates are produced. Drop-weight impact and residual compressive strength measurements are performed on t ...

Inertial sensor drift is usually corrected on a single-sensor unit level. When multiple sensor units are used, mutual information from different units can be exploited for drift correction. This study introduces a method for a drift-reduced estimation of t ...

Under-actuated robots offer multiple degrees of freedom without much added complexity to the actuation and control. Utilizing adjustable stiffness joints in these robots allows us to control their stable configurations and their mode of interaction with th ...

In the field of timber engineering, adhesive bonding remains a promising, though poorly developed, joining technique that may increase the structural stiffness and capacity of timber joints and structures. Selecting ductile adhesives may further allow to c ...

This work presents the concept and structural design of a 1000-m2 glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) sandwich roof replacing a timber roof over an indoor swimming pool. The advantages offered by the lightweight, multifunctional GFRP-polyurethane (PUR) s ...

Fiber Reinforced Composites (FRCs), due to their intrinsic heterogeneity, are generally affected by complex multi-scale failure mechanisms leading to the formation of matrix cracks that are difficult to detect and repair. FRCs with the ability to heal and ...

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are increasingly used in many load-bearing structures. Joints are the most critical structural elements as they often become the weak links in engineering structures. Bonding and bolting are two of the main joini ...

The present study essentially employs a thin-layer interface model for filled rock joints to analyze wave propagation across the jointed rock masses. The thin-layer interface model treats the rough-surfaced joint and the filling material as a continuum med ...

Although various foot models were proposed for kinematics assessment using skin makers, no objective justification exists for the foot segmentations. This study proposed objective kinematic criteria to define which foot joints are relevant (dominant) in sk ...

Today neuromuscular simulations are used in several fields, such as diagnostics and planing of surgery, to get a deeper understanding of the musculoskeletal system. During the last year, new models and datasets have been presented which can provide us with ...
