We consider a learning system based on the conventional multiplicative weight ( MW) rule that combines experts' advice to predict a sequence of true outcomes. It is assumed that one of the experts is malicious and aims to impose the maximum loss on the sys ...

This chapter sheds light on the paradox between the general perception of climate change related problems and resistance to measures addressing it, namely the support of renewable energy policies at the ballot box. Using conjoint analyses, we investigate t ...

Hyperdimensional (HD) computing is a novel approach to machine learning inspired by neuroscience, which uses vectors in a hyper-dimensional space to represent data and models. This approach has gained significant interest in recent years with applications ...

This work proposes a novel strategy for social learning by introducing the critical feature of adaptation. In social learning, several distributed agents update continually their belief about a phenomenon of interest through: i) direct observation of strea ...

Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) have seen a rapid development over the past decade. However, wide diffusion of high level CAVs is still decades to come, and will depend on many technological, policy and public acceptance factors. Merging a traditio ...

We conducted a comparative user study of the Infinadeck [1] omnidirectional treadmill native control algorithm alongside an approach based on a state observer control scheme combining a kinematic model with error dynamics that allows users to change their ...

Natural disasters, such as earthquakes, have always represented a danger to human life. Seismic risk assessment consists of the evaluation of existing buildings and their expected response in case of an earthquake; the exposure model of buildings plays a k ...

Learning how to act and adapting to unexpected changes are remarkable capabilities of humans and other animals. In the absence of a direct recipe to follow in life, behaviour is often guided by rewarding and by surprising events. A positive or a negative o ...

In developing countries with a large population and fast urbanization, High-rise Residential Buildings (HRBs) have unavoidably become a very common, if not the most, accommodation solution. The paradigm of HRB energy consumption is characterized by high-de ...

The Gm/ID approach has proven to be an efficient technique for the design of low-power analog circuits. Until now it was mostly demonstrated on older CMOS technology nodes. In this paper we will show that the Gm/ID methodology still holds for advanced tech ...

CEBRA is a machine-learning method that can be used to compress time series in a way that reveals otherwise hidden structures in the variability of the data. It excels at processing behavioural and neural data recorded simultaneously, and it can decode act ...

There is a dire need for deeper science‐policy engagement to face recent developments such as entering into the Anthropocene and our dependence as a species on technological and scientific advancements. However, there is a lack of preparedness and training ...

As modern data pipelines continue to collect, produce, and store a variety of data formats, extracting and combining value from traditional and context-rich sources such as strings, text, video, audio, and logs becomes a manual process where such formats a ...

Sexual harassment is prevalent at all levels of higher education and research and in all disciplines, which means that engineering education is no exception. Following the #MeToo movement, students have started to report cases of abuses publicly in our ins ...

Under appropriate cooperation protocols and parameter choices, fully decentralized solutions for stochastic optimization have been shown to match the performance of centralized solutions and result in linear speedup (in the number of agents) relative to no ...

The paper presents ICAP (interactive, constructive, active and passive) as the theoretical framework to understand the role of informal learning spaces as an active learning tool when students have informal meetings to work on projects. Students in our En ...

Does the scaling relationship between population sizes of cities with urban metrics like economic output and infrastructure (transversal scaling) mirror the evolution of individual cities in time (longitudinal scaling)? The answer to this question has impo ...

Quantum two-level systems, i.e., qubits, form the basis for most quantum machine learning approaches that have been proposed throughout the years. However, higher dimensional quantum systems constitute a promising alternative and are increasingly explored ...

In learning from demonstrations, many generative models of trajectories make simplifying assumptions of independence. Correctness is sacrificed in the name of tractability and speed of the learning phase. The ignored dependencies, which are often the kinem ...

The acquisition of survey responses is a crucial component in conducting research aimed at comprehending public opinion. However, survey data collection can be arduous, time-consuming, and expensive, with no assurance of an adequate response rate. In this ...
