Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

Reciprocity guarantees that in most media, sound transmission is symmetric between two points of space when the location of the source and receiver are interchanged. This fundamental law can be broken in non-linear media, often at the cost of detrimental i ...

The Dependent Object Type (DOT) calculus was designed to put Scala on a sound basis, but while DOT relies on structural subtyping, Scala is a fundamentally class-based language. This impedance mismatch means that a proof of DOT soundness by itself is ...

For safe and efficient operation, mobile robots need to perceive their environment, and in particular, perform tasks such as obstacle detection, localization, and mapping. Although robots are often equipped with microphones and speakers, the audio modality ...

Dielectric elastomers (DEs) are key materials in actuators, sensors, energy harvesters, and stretchable electronics. These devices find applications in important emerging fields such as personalized medicine, renewable energy, and soft robotics. However, e ...

Conventional loudspeakers generate sound through the vibration of a diaphragm, attached to a rigid frame through elastic suspensions. Although such construction is satisfactory for sound diffusion in steady environments, it is likely to fail in harsh condi ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...

Recent advances in signal processing, machine learning and deep learning with sparse intrinsic structure of data have paved the path for solving inverse problems in acoustics and audio. The main task of this thesis was to bridge the gap between the powerfu ...

Some of the most important and challenging problems in science are inverse problems. They allow us to understand phenomena that cannot be measured directly. Inverse problems might not always have a unique or stable solution, or might not have any solution ...

A remote microphone (RM) system can be used in combination with wearable binaural communication devices, such as hearing aids (HAs), to improve speech intelligibility. Typically, a speaker is equipped with a body-worn microphone which enables to pick up th ...

Absorbing airborne noise at frequencies below 300 Hz is a particularly vexing problem due to the absence of natural sound absorbing materials at these frequencies. The prevailing solution for low-frequency sound absorption is the use of passive narrow-band ...

Sound absorption at low frequencies still remains a challenge in both scientific research and engineering practice. Natural porous materials are ineffective in this frequency range, as well as acoustic resonators which present too narrow bandwidth of absor ...

The acoustics of a room often refer to the quality of the room in terms of sound recording as well as sound reproduction. At low frequencies, where the wavelengths are of the same order of magnitude with the dimensions of the room, due to the standing wave ...

Characterization of sound fields in rooms has always been a challenging task. A faithful reconstruction of sound fields in rooms generally would require an impractically high number of microphones. At low frequencies, where sound field can be modeled as a ...

In environmental acoustics and in room acoustics, many surfaces exhibit extended-reaction (ER) behavior, i.e., their surface impedance varies with the angle of the incident sound wave. This paper presents a phenomenological method for modeling such angle d ...

The present paper discusses the climatic effects of humidity and temperature on cochlear implant functioning and the quality of the electrical sound signal. MATLAB Simulink simulations were prepared, offering insights into signal behavior under such climat ...

In this paper we introduce an open source and reproducible microphone array hardware design and an anechoic dataset recorded with this array. The Pyramic array has 48 microphones spread onto six identical modules connected to an FPGA-ARM combo. The arrange ...

Acoustical behavior of a room for a given position of microphone and sound source is usually described using the room impulse response. If we rely on the standard uniform sampling, the estimation of room impulse response for arbitrary positions in the room ...

This paper deals with active sound attenuation in lined ducts with flow and its application to duct modes damping in aircraft engine nacelles. It presents an active lining concept based on an arrangement of electroacoustic absorbers flush mounted in the du ...

This paper addresses the general problem of blind echo retrieval, i.e., given M sensors measuring in the discrete-time domain M mixtures of K delayed and attenuated copies of an unknown source signal, can the echo locations and weights be recovered? This p ...
