The nature of the electronic ground state of Ba2IrO4 has been addressed using soft x-ray absorption and inelastic scattering techniques in the vicinity of the oxygen K edge. From the polarization and angular dependence of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS ...

Most of our understanding of chemistry derives from atomic-level structures obtained with single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Metal centers in X-ray structures of small organometallic or coordination complexes are often extremely well-defined, with errors in ...

Optical microscopy has been widely used in the life sciences and biological research for several decades. It possesses many advantages over x-ray radiography, computed tomography, ultrasound imaging and magnetic resonance imaging, in terms of being low cos ...

With the advent of X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) time-resolved X-ray spectroscopic techniques have advanced to the femtosecond regime. These are element selective techniques which offer unique insight into the electronic and chemical environment and d ...

The electronic properties of Cu0.07Bi2Se3 have been investigated using Shubnikov-de Haas and optical reflectance measurements. Quantum oscillations reveal a bulk, three-dimensional Fermi surface with anisotropy k(F)(c)/k(F)(ab) approximate to 2 and a modes ...

The rapid growth of the field of time-resolved and ultrafast electron microscopy has been accompanied by the active development of new instrumentation. Recently, time-resolved microscopes equipped with a field emission gun have been introduced, demonstrati ...

The advent of x-ray free electron lasers offers new opportunities for x-ray scattering (XRS) studies of ultrafast molecular dynamics in liquids, which have so far been limited to the 100 ps resolution of synchrotrons. In particular, anisotropic XRS induced ...

The concepts and technical realisation of the high-resolution soft X-ray beamline ADRESS operating in the energy range from 300 to 1600 eV and intended for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (R1XS) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectioscopy (ARPES) are ...

The ultrafast nuclear dynamics of the acetylene cation C2H2+ following photoionization of the neutral molecule is investigated using an extreme-ultraviolet pump/infrared probe setup. The observed modulation of the C2H+ fragment ion yield with pump-probe de ...

Spin-orbit changing transitions for bond-axis oriented collisions of NO(X) with Ar have been investigated with full quantum state selection via a crossed molecular beam experiment at collision energies of 532 cm(-1) and 651 cm(-1). NO(X) molecules were sel ...

The different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum result in diverse effects upon interaction with matter: according to the wavelength, the radiation has energy appropriate for the excitation of a specific physical process. X-rays can be used as a tool to ...

The lattice dynamics of low-dimensional BaVS3 is reported across the hexagonal-orthorhombic phase transition occurring at T-S = 250 K using a combination of the thermal diffuse scattering of x rays, inelastic x-ray scattering, and density functional theory ...

We simulate apertureless near-field optical imaging and obtain phase and amplitude scans of structured substrates for elastic scattering. The solution of the three-dimensional Maxwell equations does not involve approximations and we include large tips and ...

Moving towards an increased understanding of the dynamic processes in the edge of tokamak plasmas requires continuous innovation in diagnostic capabilities, pushing the envelope in both spatial and temporal dimenstions. Plasma density and rotation, and the ...

Recently, the possibility of generating nonclassical polariton states by means of parametric scattering has been demonstrated. Excitonic polaritons propagate in a complex interacting environment and contain real electronic excitations subject to scattering ...
