This study presents a novel framework for evaluating the luminance measurement capabilities of High Dynamic Range (HDR) sensor cameras in indoor glare conditions. Results indicate that the practical usage range of the CSEM VIP camera is significantly lower ...

Saliency models are image-based prediction models that estimate human visual attention. Such models, when applied to architectural spaces, could pave the way for design decisions where visual attention is taken into account. In this study, we tested the pe ...

Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are novel image sensors that record the arrival of individual photons at extremely high temporal resolution. In the past, they were only available as single pixels or small-format arrays, for various active imaging ap ...

Point clouds are effective data structures for the rep- resentation of three-dimensional media and hence adopted in a wide range of practical applications. In many cases, the portrayed data is expected to be visualized by humans. After acquisition, point c ...

Megapixel single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) arrays have been developed recently, opening up the possibility of deploying SPADs as general-purpose passive cameras for photography and computer vision. However, most previous work on SPADs has been limited ...

The spectral sensitivity of the average human eye in photopic conditions is represented by the photopic luminosity function V (λ). The CIE has established the photopic luminosity functions for the 2o and 10o visual fields for a standard observer applicable ...

When humans interact with each other, eye gaze movements have to support motor control as well as communication. On the one hand, we need to fixate the task goal to retrieve visual information required for safe and precise action-execution. On the other ha ...

Viewers of 360-degree videos are provided with both visual modality to characterize their surrounding views and audio modality to indicate the sound direction. Though both modalities are important for saliency prediction, little work has been done by joint ...

In an era where portable electronic devices are indispensable for a wide range of activities, the need for displays that provide both long-lasting battery life and excellent visibility in different lighting conditions is increasingly important. Emissive di ...

Avoiding discomfort glare is one of the critical aspects of maintaining visual comfort, which significantly influences occupants' overall satisfaction with their indoor environment. Discomfort glare prediction models have been developed for various lightin ...

With the growing awareness about ipRGC-influenced light (IIL) responses, design applications related to these responses are flourishing. To compare design options and optimize lighting conditions for building occupants, lighting simulations are typically u ...

The Customer Experience Management at the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) experiments with new technologies and methods to capture experiences and perceptions of passengers to design safe and customer friendly environments. First, a new methodological approac ...

Access to daylight and views out are usually recognized as beneficial to occupant comfort at the workplace. Simultaneously, discomfort glare due to direct sunlight is a known source of occupant dissatisfaction. Shading fabrics with low openness factor have ...

Recent advances in biology and neuroscience have elucidated pathways in which visible light initiates a signaling process, via the eye, responsible for activating direct and indirect biological responses. While the full impact of unnatural light patterns o ...

Gaze estimation is a difficult task, even for humans. However, as humans, we are good at understanding a situation and exploiting it to guess the expected visual focus of attention of people, and we usually use this information to retrieve people's gaze. I ...

More and more intelligent systems have to interact with humans. In order to communicate efficiently, these systems need to perceive and understand us. A key factor of communication is the people's visual focus of attention (VFOA), which is useful to estima ...

In serial dependence (SD), features of a present stimulus are judged as similar to previously presented ones. This bias is often explained by a continuity field (CF) in perception, combining similar stimuli in an extended region of space (∼ 15°) and time ( ...

Current discomfort glare prediction metrics usually account for at least one of the two categories of effects that induce discomfort glare – the saturation and contrast effects. Saturation-driven metrics (overall illuminance on the eye) are suited for brig ...

Given the large impact that the spectrum and intensity of light can have on people's health and well-being, it is of fundamental importance to understand the properties of light received under normal living conditions. Historically, as research into the bi ...

The present simulation case study compares the impact of electric lighting distributions in relation to work-desk location and orientation on work-plane and eye-level illumination within a small private office. The aim of this study is to better understand ...
