The interplay of synthetic DNA nanostructures and lipid membranes is an exciting frontier in bioengineering, with the potential to transform synthetic biology and nanomedicine. However, the fundamental principles underlying their interactions-particularly ...

The availability of a reliable and sufficient amount of water constitutes one of the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. The provision of water is still challenging in many regions of the world, especially in arid and semi-arid regions ...

Water is one of the most abundant molecules in the universe. It forms a hydrogen bond network with unique structure and dynamics. Hydrogen bonding is highly relevant to many biological processes including membrane formation, protein folding, adsorption, an ...

The self-assembly of surfactant monolayers at interfaces plays a sweeping role in tasks ranging from household cleaning to the regulation of the respiratory system. The synergy between different nanoscale species at an interface can yield assemblies with e ...

The interaction of divalent copper ions (Cu2+) with cell membranes is crucial for a variety of physiological processes of cells, such as hormone synthesis and cellular energy production. These interactions would not be possible without membrane hydration. ...

Nanoporous single-layer graphene is promising as an ideal membrane because of its extreme thinness, chemical resistance, and mechanical strength, provided that selective nanopores are successfully incorporated. However, screening and understanding the tran ...

Cells can take up nanoscale materials, which has important implications for understanding cellular functions, biocompatibility as well as biomedical applications. Controlled uptake, transport and triggered release of nanoscale cargo is one of the great cha ...

Natural organisms are made of different types of microcompartments, many of which are enclosed by cell membranes. For these organisms to display a proper function, the microcompartments must be selectively permeable. For example, cell membranes are typical ...

Recent evidence suggests involvement of biometal homeostasis in the pathological mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease (AD). For example, increased intracellular copper or zinc has been linked to a reduction in secreted levels of the AD-causing amyloid- peptid ...

A handful of nucleoid-associated proteins (NAPs) regulate the vast majority of genes in a bacterial cell. H-NS, the histone-like nucleoid-structuring protein, is one of these NAPs and protects Escherichia coli from foreign gene expression. Though lacking a ...

Over the last ten years the attention of the pharmaceutical industry has shifted away from small molecules to focus on new biologics such as antibodies, proteins and therapeutic peptides. Herein, peptides have emerged as a particularly interesting category ...

Gene product 5 (gp5) of bacteriophage T4 is a spike-shaped protein that functions to disrupt the membrane of the target cell during phage infection. Its C-terminal domain is a long and slender -helix that is formed by three polypeptide chains wrapped aroun ...

A fluorogenic probe for plasma membrane proteins based on the dye Nile Red and SNAP-tag is introduced. It takes advantage of Nile Red, a solvatochromic molecule highly fluorescent in an apolar environment, such as cellular membranes, but almost dark in a p ...

Since the pioneering work of Hirschfeld, it is known that time-integrated emission (TiEm) of a fluorophore is independent of fluorescence quantum yield and illumination intensity. Practical implementation of this important result for determining exact prob ...

Over the past years, molecular modeling and simulation techniques have had a major impact on experimental life sciences. They are capable of providing accurate insight into microscopic mechanisms, which are usually difficult to investigate experimentally. ...

For targeted cellular therapy using both synthetic and natural biomaterials, there is a need for better understanding of cell penetration mechanisms. Recently, nanoparticles (NPs) coated with mixed-ligand self-assembled monolayers exhibiting order in their ...

Cells regulate their behavior in response to mechanical strains. Cell cultures to study mechanotransuction are typically cm2 in area, far too large to monitor single cell response. We have developed an array of dielectric elastomer microactuators as a tool ...

Imagine a small integrated biomedical analysis laboratory, connected to your home computer, which would be capable of diagnosing illnesses, a lack of vitamins, or the over-presence of substances from samples of blood, urine or saliva. This hypothetic syste ...

Tethered lipid bilayers, containing a transmembrane synthetic ligand-gated ion channel (SLIC), have been formed on gold surfaces. The SLIC was designed as a highly selective receptor and reporter protein to detect antibodies in whole blood, which are of im ...

The aim of this thesis was to explore the cell mechanical properties using the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The cell membrane contains lipids microdomains, called rafts, enriched in cholesterol and sphingolipids. The rafts are believed to play an importa ...
