The quasi-continuous exhaust (QCE) regime is a type-I ELM-free high confinement regime obtained at high plasma shaping and high separatrix density. A comparison with various ELM-free regimes in the literature is presented together with potential physics mo ...

Helicon discharges are often considered somewhat mysterious, exhibiting experimental behaviors that are challenging to explain, such as abrupt plasma density jumps, hysteresis, and ‘blue core’ formation, among others. A significant part of the difficulty i ...

We demonstrate for the first time that the nonlinear saturation of neoclassical tearing modes (NTMs) can be found directly using a variational principle based on Taylor relaxation, without needing to simulate the intermediate, resistivity-dependent dynamic ...

A plasma resistivity-β driving mechanism aimed at explaining the appearance of long wavelength global instabilities in free boundary high-β tokamak plasmas with a divertor is presented. These perturbations resemble very closely the resistive wall mode phen ...

We show that the saturation of resistive tearing modes in a cylindrical tokamak, as well as the corresponding island width, can be directly calculated with a magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equilibrium code without solving the dynamics and without considering r ...

Given the low-ionization fraction of molecular clouds, ambipolar diffusion is thought to be an integral process in star formation. However, chemical and radiative-transfer effects, observational challenges, and the fact that the ion-neutral drift velocity ...

Tokamak devices aim to magnetically confine a hydrogen plasma at sufficiently high pressure to achieve net energy production from nuclear fusion of light isotopes. Predictive modeling and optimization is crucial for reliable operation of tokamak reactors, ...

In this paper we present a compact review on the mostly used techniques for computational reduction in numerical approximation of partial differential equations. We highlight the common features of these techniques and provide a detailed presentation of th ...

General three-dimensional toroidal ideal magnetohydrodynamic equilibria with a continuum of nested flux surfaces are susceptible to forming singular current sheets when resonant perturbations are applied. The presence of singular current sheets indicates t ...

Recent JET deuterium experiments with an advanced tokamak scenario using an internal transport barrier (ITB) have been performed to clearly observe destabilized toroidicity-induced Alfven eigenmodes (TAEs) by fast ions; interestingly, these also exhibit un ...

This paper presents results of extensive analysis of mode excitation observed during the operation of the Alfven Eigenmode Active Diagnostic (AEAD) in the JET tokamak during the 2019-2020 deuterium campaign. Six of eight toroidally spaced antennas, each wi ...

A two-fold analysis of electromagnetic core tokamak instabilities in the framework of the gyrokinetic theory is presented. First principle theoretical foundations of the gyrokinetic theory are used to explain and justify the numerical results obtained with ...

We present a method for performing multithermal-multibaric molecular dynamics simulations that sample entire regions of the temperature-pressure (TP) phase diagram. The method uses a variational principle [Valsson and Parrinello, Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 0906 ...

Single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) imagers can perform fast time-resolved imaging in a compact form factor, by exploiting the processing capability and speed of integrated CMOS electronics. Developments in SPAD imagers have recently made them compatible ...

There has been a growing interest, over the past few years, on understanding the effect on radio frequency waves due to turbulence in the scrape-off layer of tokamak plasmas. While the far scrape-off layer density width is of the order of centimetres in co ...

In this thesis work, the flexibility of the Tokamak à Configuration Variable (TCV) is exploited to study the influence of plasma parameters on turbulent fluctuations. The correlation electron cyclotron emission (CECE) diagnostic is used to measure low ampl ...

The design and operation of future fusion devices relying on H-mode plasmas requires reliable modelling of edge-localized modes (ELMs) for precise prediction of divertor target conditions. An extensive experimental validation of simple analytical predictio ...

This work aims at establishing the parameter space for the existence of geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) on JET as well as investigating their driving and damping mechanisms predicted by different theoretical models. This was achieved using an experimental d ...

To achieve reactor-relevant conditions in a tokamak plasma, auxiliary heating systems are required and can be realized by waves injected in the plasma that heat ions or electrons under certain conditions. Electron cyclotron resonant heating (ECRH) is a ver ...
