Understanding the impact of composition and interfaces between metals and oxides is a goal of interest for many chemical reactions. Herein, we propose a framework to map correlations between the electrochemical behavior of the oxide and the stability and r ...

This Thesis provides a comprehensive and correlative investigation of the microstructure, chemical state, and electrochemical reactivity of manganese oxide (MnOx) films, aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the deposition and dissolution mechanism of M ...

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a method to grow thin metal oxide layers on a variety of materials for applications spanning from electronics to catalysis. Extending ALD to colloidally stable nanocrystals promises to combine the benefits of thin metal oxi ...

Prismatic slip in magnesium at temperatures T

Mo-Ti alloys form solid solutions over a wide range of compositions, with lattice misfit parameters increasing significantly with titanium content. This indicates a strong increase in the critical stress for edge dislocation motion. Here, we probe the tran ...

Metal plasticity is an inherently multiscale phenomenon due to the complex long-range field of atomistic dislocations that are the primary mechanism for plastic deformation in metals. Atomistic/Continuum (A/C) coupling methods are computationally efficient ...

This work presents a study of p-type passivating contacts based on SiCx formed via a rapid thermal processing (RTP) step, using conditions compatible with the firing used to sinter screen-printed metallization pastes in industry. The contributions of the t ...

Despite recent increases in perovskite solar cell (PSC) efficiencies, long-term stability remains a barrier to manufacturing and marketing. SnO2 electron transport layers enable the low-temperature processing of planer n-i-p structured PSCs. However, ultra ...

Barium zirconium sulfide (BaZrS3) is an earth-abundant and environmentally friendly chalcogenide perovskite with promising properties for various energy conversion applications. Recently, sulfurization of oxide precursors has been suggested as a viable sol ...

Understanding the mechanical behavior of silicon nanowiresis essentialfor the implementation of advanced nanoscale devices. Although bendingtests are predominantly used for this purpose, their findings shouldbe properly interpreted through modeling. Variou ...

Tuning the mechanical properties of metals, including strength, through adjusting the type and/or concentration of added solute elements, has been recognized as an effective way to design and produce materials with desired or optimized mechanical propertie ...

Photocatalytic applications play an essential role in the search for alternative energy sources and environmental decontamination techniques. It is of fundamental interest to understand on a molecular level the aqueous solid/liquid interface, where photoca ...

Micro- and nanosized particles of liquid metals, particularly Ga-based alloys, are attracting increasing attention for applications in several fields. The surface functionalization of Ga-based nanoparticles (NPs) with organic ligands renders easily process ...

Iodine is a naturally-occurring halogen in natural waters generally present in concentrations between 0.5 and 100 mu g L-1. During oxidative drinking water treatment, iodine-containing disinfection by-products (I-DBPs) can be formed. The formation of I-DBP ...

Molybdenum atomic-doping on bio-waste derived nitrogen-doped conductive carbon electrocatalyst was synthesized and investigated for the dinitrogen reduction to ammonia in alkaline media. The assessment of the catalytic activity was found to be non-trivial ...

A microcasting process is used to produce high aspect ratio ( > 30) monocrystalline pure aluminium wires with a diameter between 14 and 115 mu m. The role of thermal activation in the plastic deformation of these microwires is measured by means of (single) ...

Overall urea electrolysis has favorable thermodynamic properties and can complement traditional water splitting by simultaneously purifying urea-rich waste streams. However, the kinetics of the reaction is slow and more efficient catalysts are required. In ...

Plastic deformation in elemental BCC metals and dilute alloys is controlled by the slower of the kink pair nucleation and kink migration processes along screw dislocations. In alloys nucleation is facilitated and migration inhibited, leading to a concentra ...

Recent theory proposes that edge dislocations in random body-centered cubic (BCC) high entropy alloys have high barriers for motion, conveying high strengths up to high temperatures. Here, the energy barriers for edge motion are computed for two model allo ...

In this article, the Joule effect heating influence on recrystallization phenomena in the Inconel 718 nickel-based superalloy is investigated in details. On the one hand, static recrystallization kinetic studies at 1020 degrees C after cold deformation up ...
