This book introduces the mathematical ideas connecting Statistical Mechanics and Conformal Field Theory (CFT). Building advanced structures on top of more elementary ones, the authors map out a well-posed road from simple lattice models to CFTs. Structure ...

We are interested in testing properties of distributions with systematically mislabeled samples. Our goal is to make decisions about unknown probability distributions, using a sample that has been collected by a confused collector, such as a machine-learni ...

The need of full transposition of the current carrying elements (strands) in large cables is frequently retained as top design criterion for conductors operating in pulsed mode. However, when the transposition error, i.e., the inductance difference among t ...

Human babies have a natural desire to interact with new toys and objects, through which they learn how the world around them works, e.g., that glass shatters when dropped, but a rubber ball does not. When their predictions are proven incorrect, such as whe ...

Group testing is a technique that can reduce the number of tests needed to identify infected members in a population, by pooling together multiple diagnostic samples. Despite the variety and importance of prior results, traditional work on group testing ha ...

Masonry buildings form building aggregates around the world in historical centers, which developed as the layout of the city or village densified. In these aggregates, adjacent buildings can share structural walls, connected at the interfaces by interlocki ...

The plastic deformation of small-scale face-centered cubic metals exhibits intermittent slip burst events that appear on stress-strain curves as sudden strain jumps and/or load drops. These events are generally attributed to the avalanche-like cooperative ...

We face a rigidity problem for the fractional p-Laplace operator to extend to this new framework some tools useful for the linear case. It is known that (-Delta)(s)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(2))(+)(s) and -Delta(p)(1 - vertical bar x vertical bar(p/p ...

Fuzzers effectively explore programs to discover bugs. Greybox fuzzers mutate seed inputs and observe their execution. Whenever a seed reaches new behavior (e.g., new code or higher execution frequency), it is stored for further mutation. Greybox fuzzers d ...

Is it possible to detect if the sample paths of a stochastic process almost surely admit a finite expansion with respect to some/any basis? The determination is to be made on the basis of a finite collection of discretely/noisily observed sample paths. We ...

Supplementary files containing datasets needed to reproduce the results of the manuscript "Generative machine learning produces kinetic models that accurately characterize intracellular metabolic states" by S. Choudhury et al (https://doi.org/10.1101/2023. ...

By operating with the Scale Relativity Theory in the dynamics of complex systems, we can achieve a description of these complex systems through a holographic-type perspective. Then, gauge invariances of a Riccati-type become functional in complex system dy ...

How can we discern whether the covariance operator of a stochastic pro-cess is of reduced rank, and if so, what its precise rank is? And how can we do so at a given level of confidence? This question is central to a great deal of methods for functional dat ...

Context. A novel high-performance exact pair-counting toolkit called fast correlation function calculator (FCFC) is presented.Aims. With the rapid growth of modern cosmological datasets, the evaluation of correlation functions with observational and simula ...

Steel beams with reduced beam section (RBS) are often used as part of prequalified connections in seismic regions. However, RBS connections are not as common in Europe. Reasons relate to easiness in fabrication, which requires on-site welding, and the seis ...

Sexual harassment is prevalent at all levels of higher education and research and in all disciplines, which means that engineering education is no exception. Following the #MeToo movement, students have started to report cases of abuses publicly in our ins ...

The shear stiffness of headed stud connector is a critical parameter for the calculation of deflection and inter-facial shear force for steel-concrete composite structure. Thus, this study presented a promising data-driven model auto-tuning Deep Forest (AT ...

The standard physiological model has serious problems accounting for many aspects of vision, particularly when stimulus configurations become slightly more complex than the ones classically used, e.g., configurations of Gabors rather than only one or a few ...

Establishing a reliable value for the axial pipe-soil interface resistance is critical for the design of offshore pipelines. Over the last few years, several independent research groups have modified existing methodologies or devised new testing setups to ...

The eigenspectrum of the Koopman operator enables the decomposition of nonlinear dynamics into a sum of nonlinear functions of the state space with purely exponential and sinusoidal time dependence. For a limited number of dynamical systems, it is possible ...
