The present disclosure provides a method and a microfluidic device for producing one or more combinatorial microcompartment comprising at least two sample species within a carrier phase, the microfluidic device comprising a target channel, a first sample s ...

The understanding of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions via receptor and ligand binding relies on our ability to study the very first events of their contact. Of particular interest is the interaction between a T cell receptor and its cognate peptide-m ...

Many natural materials are structured on different length scales. This structuring often leads to an intricate interplay between soft and stiff components, which significantly improves the fracture toughness of these materials. A class of soft material tha ...

Hydrodynamic cavitation is one of the major phase change phenomena and occurs with a sudden decrease in the local static pressure within a fluid. With the emergence of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), high-speed microfluidic devices have attracted co ...

Certain organisms including species of mollusks, polychaetes, onychophorans and arthropods produce exceptional polymeric materials outside their bodies under ambient conditions using concentrated fluid protein precursors. While much is understood about the ...

Novel technologies are needed to facilitate large-scale detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) specific antibodies in human blood samples. Such technologies are essential to support seroprevalence studies and vaccine clin ...

Thanks to recent advancements in synthetic biology, the dream of creating a synthetic cell has become feasible. However, due to its inherent complexity, one of the fundamental functions of all living systems, i.e., self-replication, remains to be introduce ...

Optical whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microcavities offer great promise in ultrasensitive biosensors because of their unique ability to enable resonant recirculation of light to achieve strong light-matter interactions in microscale volumes. However, it re ...

This paper presents the computational fluid dynamics modeling of an additive manufacturing process that is candidate for the production of Gen IV nuclear reactor fuels. The modeled process combines the internal gelation to produce metal hydrous oxides with ...

The specific interaction between DNA and proteins constitutes one of the crucial elements in the regulation of gene expression. This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of two microfluidic-based technologies called SMiLE-seq and FloChIP that ...

My thesis advances the field of shape memory polymer (SMP) actuators by providing a versatile strategy to arbitrarily reconfigure large arrays of densely packed latching soft actuators. It exploits two key intrinsic characteristics of SMPs, which are their ...

This PhD thesis aims at developing a system which can measure the mechanical properties of fluidic samples in the picoliter range. The ultimate goal is the characterization of cancer cells and viscoelastic fluids (i.e. biological fluids), in order to study ...

In this paper, we present the design, the implementation and the validation of a novel Internet of Things (IoT) drug monitoring system for the online continuous and simultaneous detection of two main anesthetics, e.g., propofol and paracetamol, in undilute ...

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) spectroscopy can open up the possibility of studying many scientifically and biologically relevant samples at the µm and sub-µm scale. Examples of vol ...

Prostate cancer is a life-threatening malignant disease, one the most common cancer types in men and leading cause of death among men because of cancer. Considering the state of the art for the diagnosis of prostate cancer a man overall has to suffer uncom ...

The interaction between the host and the pathogen is extremely complex and is affected by anatomical, physiological, and immunological diversity in the microenvironments, leading to phenotypic diversity of the pathogen. Phenotypic heterogeneity, defined as ...

The fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is the gold standard in human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) status assessment in breast cancer. The dissemination of the technique is impeded by the cost of reagents and long experimental time. For ...

The research described within this thesis is primarily motivated by two fields of science with reversed, yet complementary, approaches to addressing the same essential objective: manipulating and understanding the complex program of life. Whereas synthetic ...

Dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) are an attractive form of electromechanical transducer, possessing high energy densities, an efficient design, mechanical flexibility, high speed, and noiseless operation. They have been incorporated into a variety of ...
