The ability to train ever-larger neural networks brings artificial intelligence to the forefront of scientific and technical discoveries. However, their exponentially increasing size creates a proportionally greater demand for energy and computational hard ...

Erbium-doped fibre lasers exhibit high coherence and low noise as required for fibre-optic sensing, gyroscopes, LiDAR and optical frequency metrology. Endowing erbium-based gain in photonic integrated circuits can provide a basis for miniaturizing low-nois ...

This thesis explores the application of recent advances in integrated photonics to the field of light detection and ranging (LiDAR). The progress in photonic integration allows for unprecedented levels of light manipulation on micrometer scales through the ...

Cladding of a Zr-based metallic glass (MG) on an aluminum substrate was conducted using a layer-wise laser additive manufacturing (AM) method, leading to relative densities higher than 99%. The thickness of the cladding was about 300 μm. The effect of lase ...

Laryngeal cancer treatments, while curative, often lead to voice impairment. Minimally invasive surgical methods that facilitate greater preservation of healthy tissue have recently emerged, but they are still limited in important ways. In this work, we de ...

Dual-comb interferometry utilizes two optical frequency combs to map the optical field's spectrum to a radio-frequency signal without using moving parts, allowing improved speed and accuracy. However, the method is compounded by the complexity and demandin ...

Chip-based optical waveguides formed by a silicon nitride (Si3N4) core and a silicon dioxide (SiO2) cladding are an important platform for low loss waveguides and nonlinear optics. High Q microresonators based on this material system have become a standard ...

We demonstrate mid-infrared supercontinuum generation in an all-normal dispersion Chalcogenide PCF pumped by fiber laser. The -20dB bandwidth is 1.7~2.7μm dominated by self-phase modulation and optical wave breaking. Tapering is proposed to improve perform ...

The mid-infrared part of the optical spectrum is of high interest in a wide range of applications such as environmental gas monitoring, contaminant detection in the chemical, food or pharmaceutical industry, medical diagnosis, or defense and security. Rele ...

Self-referencing turns pulsed laser systems into self-referenced frequency combs. Such frequency combs allow counting of optical frequencies and have a wide range of applications. The required optical bandwidth to implement self-referencing is typically ob ...

The recent ability to integrate materials with different optical and optoelectronic properties in prescribed architectures within flexible fibers is enabling novel opportunities for advanced optical probes, functional surfaces and smart textiles. In partic ...

We propose a simple technique to realize Brillouin slow light in nearly transparent regime. A current-modulated semiconductor laser by a step function is used as Brillouin pump to generate a Brillouin loss doublet. ...

We experimentally demonstrate complete compensation of pulse broadening in an amplifier-based slow light system. The configuration of the delay line basically consists of two stages: a conventional Brillouin slow light system and a nonlinear regeneration e ...

The distributed optical-fibre sensors based on the properties of Brillouin scattering is the central object of this thesis. In the past decade, optical fibres have gained a large interest as sensors: attractive solutions based on the non-linear stimulated ...

We demonstrate experimentally that it is possible to control optically the group velocity of an optical pulse as it travels along an optical fiber. To achieve this control we use the effect of Stimulated Brillouin Scattering. In our experiments we have ach ...
