Recent experiments on Tokamak à Configuration Variable have made significant progress toward partial detachment of the outer divertor in neutral beam heated H-mode plasmas in conventional and alternative divertor configurations. The heating power required ...

ASCOT Fusion Source Integrator AFSI, an efficient tool for calculating fusion reaction rates and characterizing the fusion products, based on arbitrary reactant distributions, has been developed and is reported in this paper. Calculation of reactor-relevan ...

Ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) in the hydrogen minority scheme provides central ion heating and acts favorably on the core tungsten transport. Full wave modeling shows that, at medium power level (4MW), after collisional redistribution, the ratio o ...

Quantitative comparisons are presented between gyrokinetic simulations and experimental values of the carbon impurity peaking factor in a database of JET H-modes during the carbon wall era. These plasmas feature strong NBI heating and hence high values of ...

Catalytic methane oxidation is used in exhaust gas after treatment to reduce methane emissions in stationary combustion processes as well as in natural gas vehicles. Pd/zeolite catalysts provide higher activity than the commonly used Pd/Al2O3, but suffer f ...

Extensive preparations are now underway for an experiment in the Joint European Torus QET) using tritium and deuterium tritium mixtures. The goals of this experiment are described as well as the progress that has been made in developing plasma operational ...

In the frame of a collaborative effort between the European GYrotron Consortium (EGYC), the European domestic agency Fusion for Energy (F4E) and the Industrial partner Thales Electron Devices (TED), the first continuous wave (CW) prototype of the EU gyrotr ...

Long wavelength turbulent electron temperature fluctuations (k(y)rho(s)< 0.3) are measured in the outer core region (r/a> 0.8) of Ohmic L-mode plasmas at Alcator C-Mod [E. S. Marmar et al., Nucl. Fusion 49, 104014 (2009)] with a correlation electron cyclot ...

TCV is acquiring a new 1 MW neutral beam and 2 MW additional third-harmonic electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) to expand its operational range. Its existing shaping and ECRH launching versatility was amply exploited in an eclectic 2013 campaign. A ...

The TCV tokamak is equipped with a high power real time-controllable Electron Cyclotron Heating (ECH) system, made of 9 gyrotrons capable of 500 kW RF power. One of the major scientific challenge, the TCV upgrades aimed to, will be the access to a wider ra ...

The TORPEX basic plasma physics device at the Center for Plasma Physics Research (CRPP) in Lausanne, Switzerland is described. In TORPEX, simple magnetized toroidal configurations, a paradigm for the tokamak scrape-off layer (SOL), as well as more complex ...

The snowflake (SF) divertor is a plasma configuration that may enable tokamak operation at high performance and lower peak heat loads on the plasma-facing components than a standard single-null divertor. This paper reports on the results of experiments per ...

Energetic ions are found to be transported strongly from the core of MAST hybrid-like plasmas during long-lived mode (LLM) magnetohydrodynamic activity. The resulting impact on the neutral beam ion deposition and concurrent current drive is modelled usin ...

Although superconductivity will never produce energy by itself, it plays an important role in energy-related applications both because of its saving potential (e.g., power transmission lines and generators), and its role as an enabling technology (e.g., fo ...

Through a diverse research programme, the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV) addresses physics issues and develops tools for ITER and for the longer term goals of nuclear fusion, relying especially on its extreme plasma shaping and electron cyclotron r ...

The period of individual type-I edge-localized modes (ELMs) in TCV H-mode plasmas is controlled by real-time controlled application of electron cyclotron (EC) power close to the plasma pedestal. An ELM pacing algorithm, closely related to sawtooth pacing [ ...

Tokamaks with weak to moderate reversed central shear in which the minimum inverse rotational transform (safety factor) qmin is in the neighbourhood of unity can trigger bifurcated magnetohydrodynamic equilibrium states, one of which is similar to a satura ...

We introduce an upgraded version of a tomographical system which is built up from Absolute Extreme Ultraviolet-type (AXUV) detectors and has been installed on the Tokamak a Configuration Variable (TCV). The system is suitable for the investigation of fast ...

The Tokamak concept, based on magnetic confinement of a hydrogen plasma, is one of today's most promising paths to energy production by nuclear fusion. The experimental scenarios leading to the largest fusion rate are based on a high confinement plasma reg ...

In the R&D process of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Poloidal Field (PF) coils, 16 m PF5 Cable-in-Conduit Conductor (CICC) was integrated at Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP). The manufacture proc ...
