Blindness remains one of the most impairing disabilities worldwide, profoundly affecting independence, social participation, and quality of life. While assistive technologies offer partial support, they do not restore visual function. Retinal prostheses re ...

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide. Glaucoma is defined clinically as the presence of optic nerve head (ONH) degeneration and progressive loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Intra-ocular pressure (IOP) has been con ...

In an era where portable electronic devices are indispensable for a wide range of activities, the need for displays that provide both long-lasting battery life and excellent visibility in different lighting conditions is increasingly important. Emissive di ...

Background aims: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of blindness in elderly patients within developed countries, affecting more than 190 million worldwide. In AMD, the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell layer progressively d ...

Motion forecasting is crucial in enabling autonomous vehicles to anticipate the future trajectories of surrounding agents. To do so, it requires solving mapping, detection, tracking, and then forecasting problems, in a multi-step pipeline. In this complex ...

In the last few years, stroke ranked as the second most common cause of death and is the third most significant condition affecting disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) worldwide. Being the most prevalent and quality of life impacting post-stroke symptom ...

Designing architectural façades that allow sufficient daylight to create visually comfortable and pleasant environments is a challenging aspect of building design. It requires accounting for visual comfort and discomfort glare risks and understanding the f ...

When studying discomfort glare, researchers tend to rely on a single questionnaire item to obtain user evaluations. It is unclear whether the choice of questionnaire item affects the distribution of user responses and leads to inconsistencies between studi ...

Biomimetic retinas with a wide field of view and high resolution are in demand for neuroprosthetics and robot vision. Conventional neural prostheses are manufactured outside the application area and implanted as a complete device using invasive surgery. He ...

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe, validate, and compare the contrast sensitivity functions (CSFs) acquired with the novel quick CSF (qCSF) method from patients with early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration (eAMD and iAMD) a ...

While the influence of a glare source's spectrum on sensitivity to discomfort glare has been demonstrated repeatedly under electric light conditions, it has not yet been studied under actual daylit conditions. To investigate the influence of spectral alter ...

Knowing where objects are relative to us implies knowing where we are relative to the external world. Here, we investigated whether space perception can be influenced by an experimentally induced change in perceived self-location. To dissociate real and ap ...

Objective: To image healthy retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells in vivo using Transscleral OPtical Imaging (TOPI) and to analyze statistics of RPE cell features as a function of age, axial length (AL), and eccentricity. Design: Single-center, explorator ...

Zebrafish show an extraordinary potential for regeneration in several organs from fins to central nervous system. Most impressively, the outcome of an injury results in a near perfect regeneration and a full functional recovery. Indeed, among the various i ...

Access to daylight and views out are usually recognized as beneficial to occupant comfort at the workplace. Simultaneously, discomfort glare due to direct sunlight is a known source of occupant dissatisfaction. Shading fabrics with low openness factor have ...

The spectral sensitivity of the average human eye in photopic conditions is represented by the photopic luminosity function V (λ). The CIE has established the photopic luminosity functions for the 2o and 10o visual fields for a standard observer applicable ...

Avoiding discomfort glare is one of the critical aspects of maintaining visual comfort, which significantly influences occupants' overall satisfaction with their indoor environment. Discomfort glare prediction models have been developed for various lightin ...

Improving indoor lighting conditions at the workplace has the potential to support proper circadian entrainment of hormonal rhythms, sleep, and well-being. We tested the effects of optimized dynamic daylight and electric lighting on circadian phase of mela ...

Retinal prostheses hold potential for artificial vision in blind people. Here, authors show that POLYRETINA, a large and high-density photovoltaic epiretinal device, restores light-evoked cortical responses in blind Gottingen minipigs at safe irradiance le ...

The tasks of electrical micro- and nanoprobing require precision that goes beyond human perception and therefore, depend on sensors providing real-time feedback. Efforts towards automation in micro- and nanoprobing and emerging areas such as branched nanow ...
