A brain-computer interface (BCI) is a communication system that translates brain activity into commands for a computer or other devices. In other words, a BCI allows users to act on their environment by using only brain activity, without using peripheral nerves and muscles. The major goal of BCI research is to develop systems that allow disabled users to communicate with other persons, to control artificial limbs, or to control their environment. An alternative application area for brain-computer interfaces

Biometric authentication is a process of verifying an identity claim using a person's behavioral and physiological characteristics. This is in general a binary classification task because a system either accepts or rejects an identity claim. However, a biometric authentication system contains many users. By recognizing this fact, better decision can be made if user-specific information can be exploited. In this study, we propose to combine user-specific information with user-independent information such tha

We review the structural, electronic and dielectric properties of atomistic models of the Si(100)-SiO2 interface, which have been purposely designed in order to match a large variety of atomic-scale experimental data. After describing the generation procedure and the structural properties of two specific interface models, we study the corresponding electronic structure and dielectric response within the framework of density-functional theory. Particular emphasis is given to a systematic comparison between t

Head pose estimation is a research area which has many applications, e.g. in human computer interfaces design or in the analysis of people's focus-of-attention. The paper addresses the issue of head pose estimation, and makes two contributions. First it introduces a database of more than 2 hours of video with head pose annotation involving people engaged in office activities or meeting discussion. The database will be made publicly available. The second is an algorithm which couples tracking and head pose e

This paper presents an evaluation of the benefits and user acceptance of a multimodal interface in which the user interacts with a game-like interactive virtual reality application "The Enigma of the Sphinx". The interface consists of a large projection screen as the main display, a "magic wand", a stereo sound system and the user's voice for "casting spells". We present our conclusions concerning "friendliness" and sense of presence, based on observations of more than 150 users in a public event

The purpose of school bus services is to carry children from their homes to school and back. Scheduling and routing such services manually can be a long and tedious task, as it gives rise to complex combinatorial problems. To tackle those, we propose various heuristics in order to build good quality schedules of school bus routes for small and large size problems. The school bus routing and scheduling problem is modeled by introducing a performance measure corresponding to the service level provided to the

The structure of the Si(100)-SiO2 interface is investigated at the atomic scale by combining Rutherford ion scattering measurements and theoretical modeling. Ion-scattering experiments are performed in the channeling geometry using ion energies between 0.4 and 2.0 MeV. These measurements are sensitive to Si displacements at the interface between 0.07 and 0.14 Angstrom. To interpret our experimental results, we perform ion-scattering simulations on two realistic model structures of the Si(100)-SiO2 interface

We propose and demonstrate the ability and efficiency of using a universal file format for a nanolithography pattern. A problem faced by the physicists working in the field of nanolithography is a lack of a flexible pattern design software (possibly open–source) that could be applied in combination with a broad range of commercial scanning probe microscope (SPM) systems. The current nanolithography software packages are device–specific and not portable. Therefore, it is impossible to make a lithography patt

The world today is full of information systems which make huge quantities of information available. This incredible amount of information is clearly overwhelming Internet endusers. As a consequence, intelligent tools to identify worthwhile information are needed, in order to fully assist people in finding the right information. Moreover, most systems are ultimately used, not just to provide information, but also to solve problems. Encouraged by the growing popular success of Internet and the enormous busine

This paper describes a model for simulating crowds of humans in real time. We deal with a hierarchy composed of virtual crowds, groups and individuals. The groups are the most complex structure that can be controlled in different degrees of autonomy. This autonomy refers to the extent to which the virtual agents are independent of the user intervention and also the amount of information needed to simulate crowds. Thus, depending on the complexity of the simulation, simple behaviors can be sufficient to simu

The specific issue addressed in this paper is tailoring specific functionality to allow a group of teachers and students to carry out the learning process in Digital Signal and Image Processing in an electronic virtual environment that is meant to replace the physical class environment. In order such an environment to be performed, not only the course content itself but also different Web-based tools for interaction between the students and teachers are needed. A Graphical User Interface (GUI), designed and

Interactive systems, games, VR and multimedia systems require more and more flexible Virtual Humans with individualities. Behavioral animation seems to be the best way to develop this kind of applications, but there is still a major problem to select the right laws and rules to implement individual but believable behaviors. To create motion laws, there are mainly two approaches: 1) Recording the motion using motion capture systems, then to try to alternate such a motion to create this individuality. This pr
