Achieving strongly nonreciprocal scattering in compact linear acoustic devices is a challenging task. One possible solution is the use of time-modulated resonators; however, their implementation in the realm of audible airborne acoustics is typically hinde ...

We present a massively parallel and scalable nodal discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (DGFEM) solver for the time-domain linearized acoustic wave equations. The solver is implemented using the libParanumal finite element framework with extensions ...

Controlling audible sound requires inherently broadband and subwavelength acoustic solutions, which are to date, crucially missing. This includes current noise absorption methods, such as porous materials or acoustic resonators, which are typically ineffic ...

Air traffic noise emissions are responsible for a significant part of the overall environmental noise, especially in the vicinity of airports. Exposure to environmental noise is known to negatively impact health and to be associated with cardiovascular dis ...

This paper introduces Wireless IoT-based Noise Cancellation (WINC) which defines a framework for leveraging a wireless network of IoT microphones to enhance active noise cancellation in noise-canceling headphones. The IoT microphones forward ambient noise ...

Scattering wave systems that are periodically modulated in time offer many new degrees of freedom to control waves in both the spatial and frequency domains. Such systems, albeit linear, do not conserve frequency and require the adaptation of the usual the ...

Environmental noise, mostly related to human activities, has an immense impact on public health. The development of noise reduction technologies is paramount in addressing this problem. Because of practical and economic reasons, a compact, broadband, light ...

In the majority of active sound absorbing systems, a conventional electrodynamic loudspeaker is used as a controlled source. However, particular situations may require an actuator that is more resistant to harsh environments, adjustable in shape, and light ...

Sound absorption at low frequencies still remains a challenge in both scientific research and engineering practice. Natural porous materials are ineffective in this frequency range, as well as acoustic resonators which present too narrow bandwidth of absor ...

In environmental acoustics and in room acoustics, many surfaces exhibit extended-reaction (ER) behavior, i.e., their surface impedance varies with the angle of the incident sound wave. This paper presents a phenomenological method for modeling such angle d ...

The acoustics of a room often refer to the quality of the room in terms of sound recording as well as sound reproduction. At low frequencies, where the wavelengths are of the same order of magnitude with the dimensions of the room, due to the standing wave ...

Magnetic bearings represent an important alternative to conventional ball bearings for applications that require very low noise and vibrations. The absence of contact and friction between rotor and stator parts, combined with the use of active vibration co ...

Nowadays, the internet of things (IoT) nodes have started to spread in various domains of our society, from the industrial to the domestic environment. The remote sensing is one among their fundamental functions. The implementation of a radio detection and ...

Laser phase noise remains a limiting factor in many experimental settings, including metrology, time-keeping, as well as quantum optics. Hitherto this issue was addressed at low frequencies ranging from well below 1 Hz to maximally 100 kHz. However, a wide ...

Intrinsic neutron noise experiments offer a non-invasive manner to measure the prompt decay constant or reactivity of fissile systems. Using the fluctuations in the density of fission chains, one can infer the kinetics parameters via correlation analysis s ...

An accurate knowledge of the sound field distribution inside a room is required to identify and optimally locate corrective measures for room acoustics. However, the spatial recovery of the sound field would result in an impractically high number of microp ...

Conventional loudspeakers generate sound through the vibration of a diaphragm, attached to a rigid frame through elastic suspensions. Although such construction is satisfactory for sound diffusion in steady environments, it is likely to fail in harsh condi ...

Absorbing airborne noise at frequencies below 300 Hz is a particularly vexing problem due to the absence of natural sound absorbing materials at these frequencies. The prevailing solution for low-frequency sound absorption is the use of passive narrow-band ...

Some of the most important and challenging problems in science are inverse problems. They allow us to understand phenomena that cannot be measured directly. Inverse problems might not always have a unique or stable solution, or might not have any solution ...

Inspired by the human ability to localize sounds, even with only one ear, as well as to recognize objects using active echolocation, we investigate the role of sound scattering and prior knowledge in regularizing ill-posed inverse problems in acoustics. In ...
