In online data-intensive (OLDI) services, each client request typically executes on multiple servers in parallel; as a result, “system hiccups”, although rare within a single server, can interfere with many client requests and cause violations of service-l ...

The majority of currently available webpages are dynamic in nature and are changing frequently. New content gets added to webpages, and existing content gets updated or deleted. Hence, people find it useful to be alert for changes in webpages that contain ...

The constant flux of data and queries alike has been pushing the boundaries of data analysis systems. The increasing size of raw data files has made data loading an expensive operation that delays the data-to-insight time. To alleviate the loading cost, in ...

To reduce the network load during peak hours, servers deliver partial data to users during the off-peak time of the network before the actual requests are known, which is known as caching. This paper studies a single user caching problem in which the file ...

Improving the energy efficiency of data centers while guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS), together with detecting performance variability of servers caused by either hardware or software failures, are two of the major challenges for efficient resource m ...

As one of the Web's primary multilingual knowledge sources, Wikipedia is read by millions of people across the globe every day. Despite this global readership, little is known about why users read Wikipedia's various language editions. To bridge this gap, ...

Modern applications accumulate data at an exponentially increasing rate and traditional database systems struggle to keep up. Decision support systems used in industry, rely heavily on data analysis, and require real-time responses irrespective of data siz ...

In Virtual Reality (VR) applications, understanding how users explore the omnidirectional content is important to optimize content creation, to develop user-centric services, or even to detect disorders in medical applications. Clustering users based on th ...

In the problem of coded caching for media delivery, two separate coding opportunities have been identified. The first opportunity is a multi-user advantage and crucially hinges on a public broadcast link in the delivery phase. This has been explored in a p ...

Cloud computing has been experiencing sharp development over the last years, leading to an increased demand for application migration to the cloud. Cloud providers, in an effort to attract more customers and earn their confidence, offer to tenants the illu ...

A simple task of storing a database or transferring it to a different point via a communication channel turns far more complex as the size of the database grows large. Limited bandwidth available for transmission plays a central role in this predicament. I ...

Scheduling in datacenters is an important, yet challenging problem. Datacenters are composed of a large number, typically tens of thousands, of commodity computers running a variety of data-parallel jobs. The role of the scheduler is to assign cluster reso ...

The booming popularity of online services is rapidly raising the demands for modern datacenters. In order to cope with data deluge, growing user bases, and tight quality of service constraints, service providers deploy massive datacenters with tens to hund ...

The rise of web-scale services has led to a staggering growth in user data on the Internet. To transform such a vast raw data into valuable information for the user and provide quality assurances, it is important to minimize access latency and enable in-me ...

We are currently witnessing a shift towards the use of high-level programming languages for systems development. These approaches collide with the traditional wisdom which calls for using low-level languages for building efficient software systems. This sh ...

Performance critical software is almost always developed in C, as programmers do not trust high-level languages to deliver the same reliable performance. This is bad because low-level code in unsafe languages attracts security vulnerabilities and because d ...

Today, an ever-increasing number of researchers, businesses, and data scientists collect and analyze massive amounts of data in database systems. The database system needs to process the resulting highly concurrent analytical workloads by exploiting modern ...

Modern industrial, government, and academic organizations are collecting massive amounts of data at an unprecedented scale and pace. The ability to perform timely, predictable and cost-effective analytical processing of such large data sets in order to ext ...

By leveraging crowdsourcing, Web credibility evaluation systems (WCESs) have become a promising tool to assess the credibility of Web content, e.g., Web pages. However, existing systems adopt a passive Way to collect users' credibility ratings, which incur ...

Background: Wikipedia, the world's largest and most popular encyclopedia is an indispensable source of chemistry information. It contains among others also entries for over 15,000 chemicals including metabolites, drugs, agrochemicals and industrial chemica ...
