Single-layer graphene, hosting a high density of functionalized molecular-sieving atom-thick pores, is considered to be an excellent material for gas separation membranes. These functionalized atom-thick pores enable the shortest transport pathway across t ...

Ordered two-dimensional (2D) materials hosting Å-scale pores are highly promising for enabling challenging separation, thanks to well-defined pore geometry resulting in tight confinement of ions when hosted inside the pore. In addition, the 2D nature of th ...

The invention relates to methods for the preparation of ultrathin metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), in particular Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) and uses thereof and resulting products thereof, in particular useful for the preparation of gas separat ...

Patterned membranes prepared via spray-modified non -solvent induced phase separation (s-NIPS) have successfully shown enhanced fluxes and better fouling control, thanks to the increased surface area and high fluid shear at the membrane/feed interface. The ...

Research on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based membranes has gained a lot of attention in the last decade thanks to the unique and highly versatile chemistry of MOFs, which allows one to synthesize a variety of structural dimensions, topologies, pore si ...

Janus membranes, thin permeable structures with chemical and geometrical asymmetric properties, show great potential in industrial separation processes. Yet the link between the micro- and macro-scale behaviours of these membranes needs to be established r ...

Interfacial polymerization (IP) and non-solvent induced phase inversion (NIPS) are the two most commonly used mainstream technologies to fabricate separation membranes. Taking their advantages, we developed a simple, facile and scalable method to integrate ...

This study assesses the influence during interfacial polymerization on polyamide thin film composite (TFC) morphology and performance of varying monomer concentrations and organic phases with widely varying physico-chemical characteristics (interfacial ten ...

Nanostructured graphitic materials, including graphene hosting Å to nanometer-sized pores, have attracted attention for various applications such as separations, sensors, and energy storage. Graphene with Å-scale pores is a promising next-generation materi ...

An acoustic dimer composed of two electronically controlled electroacoustic resonators is presented with the view of exploring one-dimensional topological phenomena. Active control allows real-time manipulation of the metamaterial’s properties, including i ...

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) host intrinsically porous structure and rich structural and chemical features. Several MOFs with pore aperture comparable to the size of gas molecules have attracted interest to form the selective layer of membranes. Synthes ...

Hydrated lipid bilayer membranes are crucial components of cells and organelles, serving as the outer boundary that separates the cellular components from the extracellular environment. Lipid membranes regulate their structures and functions by dynamically ...

The evolution of the 3D morphology is at the center of many relevant biological processes ranging from cellular differentiation to cancer invasion and metastasis. Microscopy techniques, such as electron microscopy (EM), super-resolution (SR) optical micros ...

The synthesis of molecular-sieving two-dimensional zeolitic membranes by the assembly of crystalline building blocks without resorting to the secondary growth process is highly desirable. The precise pore size for molecular sieving, ultrathin thickness, an ...

Gas separation is one of the most important industrial processes and is poised to take a larger role in the transition to renewable energy, e.g., carbon capture and hydrogen purification. Conventional gas separation processes involving cryogenic distillati ...

Nanoporous single-layer graphene (N-SLG) membranes, owing to their single-atom thinness, have the potential to exceed the permeance and selectivity limits of gas separation membranes. However, two key issues in the top-down N-SLG synthesis need to be addre ...

Biologically inspired solid-state nanopores are artificial openings or apertures in thin membranes similar to natural protein ion channels in a lipid bilayer of cell membranes. In solid-state nanopores, a thin insulating membrane with single or multiple po ...

The work demonstrated in this thesis represent the path towards developing the large-scale fabrication of two-dimensional nanoporous membrane devices and use thereof as platforms to study nanoscale physics of water and ion flow through confined channels. M ...

Monitoring human sweat with wearable biochemical sensors could give insights into the hydration, fatigue, and health status, tracking the variations of biomarkers non-invasively and in real-time. In this field, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) a ...
