The work presented in this thesis lies at the intersection of Machine Learning (ML) and control theory. The first part is dedicated to the design of Deep Neural Network (DNN) architectures with specific numerical properties, inspired by dynamical systems m ...

This paper studies the infinite-width limit of deep linear neural networks (NNs) initialized with random parameters. We obtain that, when the number of parameters diverges, the training dynamics converge (in a precise sense) to the dynamics obtained from a ...

Automatic verification of programs manipulating arrays relies on specialised decision procedures. A methodology to classify the theories handled by these procedures is introduced. It is based on decomposition theorems in the style of Feferman and Vaught. T ...

In a non-synchronous system with n processes, no t(0)-resilient (deterministic or probabilistic) Byzantine consensus protocol can prevent a disagreement among correct processes if the number of faulty processes is > n - 2t(0). Therefore, the community defi ...

The capabilities of deep learning systems have advanced much faster than our ability to understand them. Whilst the gains from deep neural networks (DNNs) are significant, they are accompanied by a growing risk and gravity of a bad outcome. This is troubli ...

De novo protein design explores uncharted sequence and structure space to generate novel proteins not sampled by evolution. A main challenge in de novo design involves crafting “designable” structural templates to guide the sequence searches toward adoptin ...

The Obukhov-Corrsin theory of scalar turbulence [21, 54] advances quantitative predictions on passive-scalar advection in a turbulent regime and can be regarded as the analogue for passive scalars of Kolmogorov's K41 theory of fully developed turbulence [4 ...

Dexterous in-hand manipulation in robotics, particularly with multi-fingered robotic hands, poses significant challenges due to the intricate avoidance of collisions among fingers and the object being manipulated. Collision-free paths for all fingers must ...

In recent years, considerable interest has been devoted to the interactions between cavitation bubbles and tissue-mimicking materials due to their promising applications in medicine and biomedical sciences. The strong fluid-structure interaction between a ...

We consider fluid flows, governed by the Navier-Stokes equations, subject to a steady symmetry-breaking bifurcation and forced by a weak noise acting on a slow timescale. By generalizing the multiple-scale weakly nonlinear expansion technique employed in t ...

The standard way to do computations in Quantum Field Theory (QFT) often results in the requirement of dramatic cancellations between contributions induced by a "heavy" sector into the physical observables of the "light" (or low energy) sector - the phenome ...

Deploying compute-intensive deep neural networks (DNNs) on resource-constrained end devices has become a prominent trend, enabling localized intelligence. However, efficiently deploying these DNNs at scale poses challenges. To address this, extensive resea ...

Purpose The aim of this study was to develop a novel approach for predicting the expression status of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and its subtypes in patients with Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC) using a Three-Dimensional Convolutional Neura ...

The objective of this paper is to investigate a new numerical method for the approximation of the self-diffusion matrix of a tagged particle process defined on a grid. While standard numerical methods make use of long-time averages of empirical means of de ...

Reinforcement learning (RL) is inherently rife with non-stationarity since the states and rewards the agent observes during training depend on its changing policy. Therefore, networks in deep RL must be capable of adapting to new observations and fitting n ...

Dynamic nuclear polarisation (DNP) of solids doped with high-spin metal ions, such as Gd3+, is a useful strategy to enhance the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensitivity for these samples. Spin diffusion can relay polarisation throughout a sample, which ...

Many feedforward neural networks (NNs) generate continuous and piecewise-linear (CPWL) mappings. Specifically, they partition the input domain into regions on which the mapping is affine. The number of these so-called linear regions offers a natural metric ...

This work presents a study of two-phase flow generated inside a rock-flow cell setup. It is characterized by a pipe section filled with fluid (oil in our studies) that is put into oscillation around its mass centre by an electric motor. This type of appara ...

Species distribution models (SDMs) aim to predict the distribution of species by relating occurrence data with environmental variables. Recent applications of deep learning to SDMs have enabled new avenues, specifically the inclusion of spatial data (envir ...

This paper numerically evaluates the accuracy and performance of a stabilized finite element Reduced Order Modelling (ROM) approach that is designed to simulate pulsatile blood flows. The method is able to estimate fluid flow parametric solutions of intere ...
