We investigate the nature of the phase transitions in the quantum Ashkin-Teller chain in the presence of chiral perturbations. We locate the Lifshitz line separating a region of direct chiral transitions from the region where the transition is through an i ...

Side-by-side hybrid textiles are an intermediate step for the production of fibre-reinforced thermoplastic composites. Press moulding these materials combining reinforcing fibre textiles and thermoplastic matrix textiles or flexible layers is a promising m ...

Aminoacids and peptides generally exhibit zwitterionic forms withsalt bridge (SB) structures in solution but charge-solvated (CS) motifsin the gas phase. Here, we report a study of non-covalent complexesof the protonated amino acid arginine, ArgH(+)(H2O)( ...

We address the problem of stably and efficiently training a deep neural network robust to adversarial perturbations bounded by an

l_1

norm. We demonstrate that achieving robustness against

l_1

-bounded perturbations is more challenging than in the

l_2

We show how to construct, by exploiting adiabatic time and length scale separation between atomistic and continuum mechanics, a multiscale scheme for continuum dynamics free from macroscopic constitutive modeling. To do so, we introduce a new set of degree ...

The development of small-angle scattering tensor tomography has enabled the study of anisotropic nanostructures in a volume-resolved manner. It is of great value to have reconstruction methods that can handle many different nanostructural symmetries. For s ...

Biological research heavily relies on the use of animal models, which has made it difficult to answer specific questions about human biology and disease. However, with the advent of human organoids - miniature versions of tissues generated in 3D human stem ...

Dynamical System (DS)-based closed-loop control is a simple and effective way to generate reactive motion policies that well generalize to the robotic workspace, while retaining stability guarantees. Lately the formalism has been expanded in order to handl ...

Phase transitions in non-Hermitian systems are at the focus of cutting edge theoretical and experimental research. On the one hand, parity-time- (PT-) and anti-PT-symmetric physics have gained ever-growing interest, due to the existence of non-Hermitian sp ...

We show that including pairing and repulsion into the description of one-dimensional spinless fermions, as in the domain wall theory of commensurate melting or the interacting Kitaev chain, leads, for strong enough repulsion, to a line of critical points i ...

The surface charge of an open water surface is crucialfor solvationphenomena and interfacial processes in aqueous systems. However, themagnitude of the charge is controversial, and the physical mechanismof charging remains incompletely understood. Here we ...

Low-density neutron matter is characterized by fascinating emergent quantum phenomena, such as the formation of Cooper pairs and the onset of superfluidity. We model this density regime by capitalizing on the expressivity of the hidden-nucleon neural-netwo ...

We study elastic ribbons subject to large, tensile pre-stress confined to a central region within the cross-section. These ribbons can buckle spontaneously to form helical shapes, featuring regions of alternating chirality (phases) that are separated by so ...

The log law of the wall, joining the inner, near-wall mean velocity profile (MVP) in wall-bounded turbulent flows to the outer region, has been a permanent fixture of turbulence research for over hundred years, but there is still no general agreement on th ...

This thesis reports on the realization of the first experiments conducted with superfluid, strongly interacting Fermi gases of 6Li coupled to the light field of an optical cavity. In the scope of existing ultracold atomic platforms, this is the first time ...

We study the performance of Markov chains for the q-state ferromagnetic Potts model on random regular graphs. While the cases of the grid and the complete graph are by now well-understood, the case of random regular graphs has resisted a detailed analysis ...

We present a first-principles study of the low-temperature rhombohedral phase of BaTiO3 using Hubbardcorrected density-functional theory. By employing density-functional perturbation theory, we compute the onsite Hubbard U for Ti(3d) states and the intersi ...

Carbon K-edge resonant Auger spectra of gas-phase allene following excitation of the pre-edge 1s -> pi* transitions are presented and analysed with the support of EOM-CCSD/cc-pVTZ calculations. X-Ray absorption (XAS), X-ray photoelectron (XPS), valence ban ...

The conjugate heat transfer in mixtures of a fluid and single granular clusters is studied in this paper using a novel lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) programmed for parallel computation on the graphics processing unit (GPU). The LBM is validated for heat c ...

Modern manufacturing engineering is based on a ``design-through-analysis'' workflow. According to this paradigm, a prototype is first designed with Computer-aided-design (CAD) software and then finalized by simulating its physical behavior, which usually i ...
