To explore the governing mechanism underlying the tensile fatigue behavior of Ultra-high Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (UHPFRC), this study tested eight specimens using four advanced non-destructive measurement techniques. First, mag ...

In geological reservoirs, pore fluid chemistry can affect rock strength by inducing mineral dissolution, precipitation, and alteration, among other processes. Increasing pressure and temperature can shift deformation from localized to ductile, decreasing p ...

Titanium-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) manufactured by additive manufacturing offer tremendous lightweighting opportunities. However, processing the high reinforcement contents needed to substantially improve elastic modulus while conserving signifi ...

Reinforced concrete flat slabs consist of a continuous, thin concrete plate that rests on a grid of columns. The supporting surface of the columns is very small compared to the floor plan dimensions, leading to concentrations of shear forces near the colum ...

With the emergence of ultra-portable ultrasound systems, the need to reduce cost and complexity of ultrasound systems has intensified. Sparse arrays, employing fewer transducer elements to acquire images, offer a viable solution by effectively minimizing d ...

Experimental data is imperative to characterize the behavior of materials used in structural analysis models. The aim of this data paper is to establish a database of material-scale uniaxial experiments, primarily conducted at EPFL, to assist with simulati ...

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is an essential technology for DNA identification in genomic research. DNA fragmentation is a critical step for NGS and doing this on-chip is of great interest for future integrated genomic solutions. Here we demonstrate fa ...

A novel Ultra High-Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) mix with synthetic fibers and a low clinker matrix, henceforth referred to as PE-UHPFRC, has been developed for structural applications. It exhibits a high tensile elastic limit above 7 MPa, ...

Thin-ply composites represent a promising approach to further improve the performance of carbon fibre composite structures thanks to their ability to delay the onset of matrix cracking and delamination up to the point of fibre dominated failure. However, t ...

A large number of design approaches for structural concrete rely on the applicability of limit analysis. This is for instance the case of bending and shear design in members with transverse reinforcement, where it is assumed that plastic compression fields ...

The effect of physical aging and continuation of curing on the physical and mechanical properties of a commercial cold-curing structural epoxy adhesive used in bridge construction has been investigated during the first year. Since adhesive bridge joints ar ...

Fracture of carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRPs) is dominated by large scale fiber bridging which acts as a very important toughening mechanism. The objective of this paper is to investigate the intralaminar Mode I fracture in a unidirectional CFRP com ...

A novel method for the in-situ repair of composite sandwich structures using microvascular networks and cyanoacrylate (CA) adhesive systems has been presented. Upon a damage event, the vascules become ruptured, providing a route for the introduction of adh ...

The development of residual strains and stresses is critical to manufacture composite structures with the required dimensional stability and mechanical performance. This work uses Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors to monitor strain build-up in carbon fiber ...

The application on existing Reinforced Concrete (RC) slabs of cast-on-site Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced cement-based Composite (UHPFRC) layers is an efficient reinforcement technique, currently spreading. The thin layer of UHPFRC, with or withou ...

The influence of thermal activation temperature in the pozzolanic reactivity of low grade kaolinitic clay and the impact of calcination products in OPC hydration are assessed in this paper. The raw material, with approximately 40% kaolinite and 40% of 2:1 ...

This work reports the outcomes of an extensive experimental campaign on the retrofitting of masonry walls by means of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets, carried out at University of Applied Sciences (UAS) Fribourg. In the first stage, static-cy ...

The intrinsic lattice resistance to dislocation motion, or Peierls stress, depends on the core structure of the dislocation and is one essential feature controlling plastic anisotropy in materials such as HCP Zn, Mg, and Ti. Here, we implement an anisotrop ...
