In preparation for error field (EF) identification experiments in ITER, a series of experiments have been conducted at JET to test the portability of the non-disruptive compass scan, a method originally designed and tested in DIII-D (Paz-Soldan et al 2022 ...

Plasma shape control is a fundamental tool for effective tokamak operation, allowing improved plasma performance and the pursuit of challenging scientific objectives. In this framework, the Tokamak á Configuration Variable (TCV) of the École Polytechnique ...

Load-bearing systems in buildings, significant in material use and embodied greenhouse gas emissions (EGHGE), have lacked detailed analysis on their environmental and functional relationships over time and space. This study evaluates the environmental impa ...

Glacier-fed streams are the cold, ultra-oligotrophic, and unstable streams that are fed by glacial meltwater. Despite these extreme conditions, they harbour a diverse and abundant microbial diversity that develops into biofilms, covering the boulders and s ...

Dexterous in-hand manipulation in robotics, particularly with multi-fingered robotic hands, poses significant challenges due to the intricate avoidance of collisions among fingers and the object being manipulated. Collision-free paths for all fingers must ...

The work presented in this thesis lies at the intersection of Machine Learning (ML) and control theory. The first part is dedicated to the design of Deep Neural Network (DNN) architectures with specific numerical properties, inspired by dynamical systems m ...

We study the problem of performance optimization of closed -loop control systems with unmodeled dynamics. Bayesian optimization (BO) has been demonstrated to be effective for improving closed -loop performance by automatically tuning controller gains or re ...

Gene regulatory networks (GRNs) play a crucial role in an organism's response to changing environmental conditions. Cellular behaviors typically result from the integration of multiple gene outputs, and their regulation often demands precise control of num ...

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a significant increase in working from home worldwide, making the workfrom-home (WFH) setting a crucial context for studying the influence of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) on workers' well-being and productivity. A nar ...

Assessing the individual risk of Major Adverse Cardiac Events (MACE) is of major importance as cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of death worldwide. Quantitative Myocardial Perfusion Imaging (MPI) parameters such as stress Myocardial Blood F ...

To support the decarbonisation of the power sector and offset the volatility of a system with high levels of renewables, there is growing interest in residential Demand-Side Management (DSM) solutions. Traditional DSM strategies require consumers to active ...

The dynamic landscape of sustainable smart cities is witnessing a signi ficant transformation due to the integration of emerging computational technologies and innovative models. These advancements are reshaping data -driven planning strategies, practices, ...

In this paper, we present a new parameterization and optimization procedure for minimizing the weight of ribbed plates. The primary goal is to reduce embodied CO2 in concrete floors as part of the effort to diminish the carbon footprint of the construction ...

Control systems operating in real-world environments often face disturbances arising from measurement noise and model mismatch. These factors can significantly impact the perfor- mance and safety of the system. In this thesis, we aim to leverage data to de ...

Cells cope with and adapt to ever-changing environmental conditions. Sophisticated regulatory networks allow cells to adjust to these fluctuating environments. One such archetypal system is the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pho regulon. When external inorganic ...

In integrated ecosystem assessment projects, scenarios provide alternative images of environmental futures as orientation knowledge for opinion-forming and decision-making. Participatory scenario frameworks provide the methodological basis for ecosystem sc ...

Background Universal access to basic sanitation remains a global challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Efforts are underway to improve access to sanitation in informal settlements, often through shared facilities. However, access to ...

Optical sensors and sensing technologies are playing a more and more important role in our modern world. From micro-probes to large devices used in such diverse areas like medical diagnosis, defense, monitoring of industrial and environmental conditions, o ...

In addition to individual practices and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, housing conditions may also be associated with the risk of diarrhea. Our study embraced a broad approach to health determinants by looking at housing depriv ...

We present a framework for performing regression when both covariate and response are probability distributions on a compact and convex subset of

\R^d

. Our regression model is based on the theory of optimal transport and links the conditional Fr'echet m ...
