In this paper, we show how a deep-submicron field-programmable gate array (FPGA) can be operated more stably at extremely low temperatures through special firmware design techniques. Stability at low temperatures is limited through long power supply wires ...

The prediction of pressure and output power fluctuations amplitudes on Francis turbine prototype is a challenge for hydro-equipment industry since it is subjected to guarantees to ensure smooth and reliable operation of the hydro units. The European FP7 re ...

In most of applications, power converters are controlled to allow their output current/voltage to follow the required reference values. For DC/DC and DC/AC converters, the control must take into account their input voltage, which must be rejected. In such ...

Today, the electricity industries are facing new challenges as the market is being liberalized and deregulated in many countries. Electricity storage is undoubtedly a disruptive technology that will play, in the near future, a major role in the fast develo ...

In order to pave the way to a sustainable energy future based on a large share of Distributed Generation (DG), there is a clear need to prepare the European electricity system for the large-scale integration of both renewable and other distributed energy s ...

Many electric power generators use gas turbines as power sources. Typically they are connected to the turbines through a mechanical gearbox in order to adapt their synchronous speed to the optimal rotation speed of the turbine, which is very often much hig ...

Spin-dependent transport properties of magnetic nanostructures have been investigated by means of magneto-thermogalvanic voltage measurements: the ac voltage response to an ac temperature oscillation is measured for various magnetic nanostructures under dc ...

Making transportation systems more energy efficient is one of the key challenge in this century. This paper presents a solution for increasing the efficiency of an electrical scooter by adding a supercapacitive energy storage in parallel to the original ba ...

In the transportation field, the empty weight of the vehicle has to be as light as possible in order to have the highest energetic efficiency. For onboard storage electrical systems, dc/dc converters are usually used to control the power flows in the vehic ...

The aim of the present paper is to describe a new control strategy for a three level NPC converter connected to the grid, characterized by its high efficiency. This efficiency is achieved using a square wave modulation or SWM, which has the advantage of a ...

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is an automatic identification method, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponders. An RFID tag is a small object that can be attached to or incorporated into a produc ...

An increasing recourse to renewable energies is one of the key solutions to address the current resource and environmental concerns related to the world energy supply. Because of the distributed and intermittent nature of several of them (Solar, Wind), an ...

Air-magnetic circuit breakers are widely used for short-circuit protection in dc electric railways or industrial plants. The well-known drawbacks of these breakers are mainly a slow breaking action, a short lifetime, and high maintenance costs due to the d ...

This paper presents the development of radial eddy-current position sensors for high temperature active magnetic bearing (AMB) applications. Thick-film technology was used to realize silver coils printed on ceramic substrates. Long term measurements showed ...

Ultracapacitors, also called electrochemical double layer capacitors (EDLC) or supercapacitors, may improve the performance of conventional electrolytic capacitors in terms of specific energy, or improve the performance of rechargeable batteries in terms o ...

The problem of energy optimization in multi-core systems (such as single-chip multiprocessors) where the individual energy demands of various processing elements are governed by instantaneous workload requirements is well defined in literature. The signifi ...

In symmetric multilevel inverters, there is a tradeoff between the output quality and the reliability and efficiency of the converter. New asymmetric and hybrid solutions, using different voltages and devices in various parts of the inverter, promise signi ...

Power Factor Corrected rectifiers are a new tendency in development of power supplies. In the last few years, a lot of R&D activities have led to a new category of products for one-phase applications. In this contribution, a new simplified topology is prop ...

This paper presents the operation principle and the properties of a single-phase DC-AC converter with medium frequency transformer and soft commutation. The influence of the non-dissipative snubber capacitor and the transformer parasitic components for ZVS ...
