The understanding of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions via receptor and ligand binding relies on our ability to study the very first events of their contact. Of particular interest is the interaction between a T cell receptor and its cognate peptide-m ...

Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are polymeric films that can be adhered to and detached from surfaces without leaving residue. Researchers are looking to enhance the bond strength between PSAs and different substrates. It can be achieved by tuning PSA' ...

Despite the development of hydrogels with a wide range of mechanical properties, insufficient adhesion between these materials and biological surfaces limits their use in the biomedical applications. Most recent advancements in highly adhesive hydrogel sys ...

Pathogen attachment to host tissue is critical in the progress of many infections. Bacteria use adhesion in vivo to stabilize colonization and subsequently regulate the deployment of contact-dependent virulence traits. To specifically target host cells, th ...

In animals, cell-matrix adhesions are essential for cell migration, tissue organization, and differentiation, which have central roles in embryonic development [1-6]. Integrins are the major cell surface adhesion receptors mediating cell-matrix adhesion in ...

Multicellular clusters in circulation can exhibit a substantially different function and biomarker significance compared to individual cells. Notably, clusters of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) are much more effective initiators of metastasis than single C ...

Rapid adhesion between tissue and synthetic materials is relevant to accelerate wound healing and to facilitate the integration of implantable medical devices. Most frequently, tissue adhesives are applied as a gel or a liquid formulation. This manuscript ...

Adhesion towards glass and interfacial healing of partially supramolecular hybrid polymer networks featuring a range of H-bdnds content were investigated through two dedicated adhesion test methods. In a first series of tests, adhesion strength was measure ...

Bacterial adhesion is the first and a significant step in establishing infection. This adhesion normally occurs in the presence of flow of fluids. Therefore, bacterial adhesins must be able to provide high strength interactions with their target surface in ...

Tumor-associated lymphatic vessels actively participate in tumor progression and dissemination. ADAM17, a sheddase for numerous growth factors, cytokines, receptors, and cell adhesion molecules, is believed to promote tumor development, facilitating both t ...

Background: Recently, the effects of nanogratings have been investigated on PC12 with respect to cell polarity, neuronal differentiation, migration, maturation of focal adhesions and alignment of neurites. Methodology/Principal Findings: A synergistic proc ...

The mechanical coupling between adherent cells and their substrates is a major driver of downstream behavior. This coupling relies on the formation of adhesion sites and actin bundles. How cells generate these elements remains only partly understood. A pot ...

We report on key challenges of the development of steel cords reinforced thermoplastic elastomer composites with smart functionalities: adhesion tailoring for a durable mechanical load transfer through steel cords or other transmission elements by the use ...

Cell organization into functional multicellular three-dimensional structures is a long-standing challenge. In particular, engineering of vascularized tissues requires both blood and lymphatic neovascular network formation in a simultaneous and coordinated ...

When force is applied to cell-matrix adhesion complexes, they respond by growing larger and stronger. It emerges that strengthening involves transient motion of the transmembrane integrin receptors and their eventual immobilization to the extracellular mat ...

Neuroplastin (Np) is a glycoprotein belonging to the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) and existing in two isoforms, Np55 and Np65, named according to their molecular weights. The extracellular part of Np65 contains three immunog ...

Neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM)-mediated cell adhesion results in activation of intracellular signaling cascades that lead to cellular responses such as neurite outgrowth, neuronal survival, and modulation of synaptic activity associated with cognitiv ...

In a recent article (Sekulic and Curnier (2007) [1]), an original axisymmetric epoxy-stamp on glass-disc specimen, which exhibits stable debonding, was presented for identifying the adhesive properties between epoxy and glass, namely interface debonding en ...

The field of mechanobiology has grown tremendously in the past few decades, and it is now well accepted that dynamic stresses and strains can impact cell and tissue organization, cell-cell and cell-matrix communication, matrix remodeling, cell proliferatio ...

In this work, the lack of adhesion occurred during the up-scaling of the deposition of tribological coatings in a semi-industrial apparatus is interpreted. The adhesion problems were detected for both hard and self-lubricant coatings from W–Ti–N and W:C sy ...
