Low-dimensional materials exhibiting stable magnetic ordering are interesting from a fundamental point of view as well as for future application in information technologies. Metalorganic magnets, created by linking metal atoms with specific organic molecul ...

The spin-orbit field and interfacial exchange field (IEF) are two major interface phenomena, and the detection and manipulation of these fields can enable a variety of nanoscale spintronics devices. Optimizing the IEF, which governs the spin-dependent scat ...

Nanoscale detection and control of the magnetic order underpins a spectrum of condensed-matter research and device functionalities involving magnetism. The key principle involved is the breaking of time-reversal symmetry, which in ferromagnets is generated ...

Hubbard-corrected density-functional theory has proven to be successful in addressing self-interaction errors in 3D magnetic materials. However, the effectiveness of this approach for 2D magnetic materials has not been extensively explored. Here, we use PB ...

The phase of the quantum-mechanical wave function can encode a topological structure with wide-ranging physical consequences, such as anomalous transport effects and the existence of edge states robust against perturbations. While this has been exhaustivel ...

Fluidic actuation enables movement in a wide range of mechanical systems, from simple laboratory devices to more complex industrial machinery. Fluids are used to generate motion of mechanical pieces. The term "fluids" encompasses two types of technologies: ...

Spontaneous symmetry breaking underlies much of our classification of phases of matter and their associated transitions(1-3). The nature of the underlying symmetry being broken determines many of the qualitative properties of the phase; this is illustrated ...

We have witnessed a wide range of theoretical as well as experimental investigations to envisage external stimuli induced changes in electronic, optical and magnetic properties in the metal organiccomplexes, while hybrid perovskites have recently joined th ...

Soft Magnetic Composites (SMC) are an alternative to laminated steels for the design of smaller and lighter electromagnetic devices.Such electromagnetic devices might be subjected to significant mechanical stresses that can alter their electromagnetic prop ...

We study the dynamics of magnetic fields in chiral magnetohydrodynamics, which takes into account the effects of an additional electric current related to the chiral magnetic effect in high-energy plasmas. We perform direct numerical simulations, consideri ...

Among the many complex bioactuators functioning at different scales, the organelle cilium represents a fundamental actuating unit in cellular biology. Producing motions at submicrometer scales, dominated by viscous forces, cilia drive a number of crucial b ...

A flow directed device adapted to be guided by a fuid, such as blood, flow within a tubular structure such as a blood vessel is disclosed, said device comprising a proximal end (100), a distal end (101) and an elongated body (102) in between defining a lon ...

In several domains of physics, including first principle simulations and classical models for polarizable systems, the minimization of an energy function with respect to a set of auxiliary variables must be performed to define the dynamics of physical degr ...

The extremely large magnetoresistance (XMR) observed in many topologically nontrivial and trivial semimetals has attracted much attention in relation to its underlying physical mechanism. In this paper, by combining the band structure and Fermi surface (FS ...

Two isostructural double halide-bridged polymers, consisting of stacked Cu2L2X4 dimers, with L = benzamide (BA) and X = Cl- in CuClBA and X = Br- in CuBrBA, were synthesised. The experimental magnetic data of both compounds were recorded and it was found t ...

The marked interplay between the crystalline, electronic, and magnetic structure of atomically thin magnets has been regarded as the key feature for designing next-generation magneto-optoelectronic devices. In this respect, a detailed understanding of the ...

The pyrovanadates beta -Mn2V2O7 and beta -Cu2V2O7 were previously investigated as photoanode materials for water splitting. Neither of them, however, was found to be sufficiently active. In this work, we predict the properties of these two structurally sim ...

Collective tunneling is a ubiquitous phenomenon in finite-size spin clusters that shows up in systems as diverse as molecular magnets or spin clusters adsorbed at surfaces. The basic problem we explore is to understand how small flipping terms can cooperat ...

A series of Cu(diimine)(X-sal)(NO3) complexes, where the diimine is either 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and X-sal is a monoanionic halogenated salicylaldehyde (X = Cl, Br, I, or H), have been synthesized and characterized by elementa ...

The dimerized quantum magnet BaCuSi2O6 was proposed as an example of "dimensional reduction" arising near the magnetic-field-induced quantum critical point (QCP) due to perfect geometrical frustration of its interbilayer interactions. We demonstrate by hig ...
